Re: how do you know if it's a good price
check out bluenile.com, they have a guide that is pretty reliable. They can be a tad costly, but their diamonds are a good quality.
ALSO, get it appraised. I used the 'Jewlery Judge' in Mineola on Washington avenue (it might still be Garden City over there)...... I had to go for my insurance & they gave me some good advice as well. It costs $70, but you will need it for your insurancee anyway.

The metal matters too - yellow gold bands are less than white gold which is less expensive than platinum...as well as the quality & color of the stones.
One jeweler quoted us at about $1500 for .66ctw, F color, platinum, designer, eternity pave band.

Re: carat and cost
there are so many factors that come into play with the cost: -size of stones -number of stones -color/clarity of stones -choice of metal -varying markups from different retailers

Re: carat and cost
My is a total weight of 4.27. It has 16 diamonds (avg. .27 a carat). It is a platinum eternity band. Cost was $9,000. FI got a good price because his client is a jeweler/designer for cartier.

Re: carat and cost
Mine will be 5 emerald-cut diamonds (1.35 ct.tw; F color, & VS1 clarity), in a prong setting, and came out to $1800.

Re: carat and cost
My wedding band cost 1500. It's pave diamonds set in platinum in a wave design. It was from christian bernard jewelers where my e-ring is from. I think its .25 of a carat but it may be slightly more.

Re: carat and cost
My band is 1/2 carat, all princess cut. They're tiny but soooo sparkly. We spent $700 on it.
