Career Advice

Hello Everyone!

I am currently a Systems Analyst and would love to work as a Librarian. I just don’t know how to break into the Library field. I would love to find a position where I could work as a librarian asst while I earn my degree. I figured maybe someone on the board might work as a librarian or might have a friend that is a librarian. Any advice/ feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

i know 1017bride is a librarian. She's not on as much these days b/c she's busy with work, so I'd FM her.

Re: Career Advice

I am doing the same thing! My mom works in the library and she told me this:
You can get a part time job as a librarian trainee once you are enrolled in the program. (I am applying to Queens College)
If you take the civil service test, you can get a full time job as a trainee... however, I was just on the civil service website, and the last time the test was given was Oct. 2004, so I am guessing they only give it once a year.
I am just going to be calling libraries and ask them if they have positions open, once I get accpeted into a program.
Hope this helps.

Re: Career Advice

both queens public library and new york public library have trainee programs where you work there part-time during your mls program. you should be able to find info on their websites. i don't think they'll take you until you start the program though. good luck!

What are the qualifications needed to get into the program?

Thanks!

I fm'd you, but forgot to tell you that the only qualifications to get into the graduate school is usually an undergrad. degree in any field. If your undergrad. average was low you might need the GREs too.
