Career change?

Career change?

Has anyone made a career change where they knew they would be taking a significant drop (I mean very significant--like 50% drop or so) in income? If so, how do you manage and would you say you regret it or could never be happier?

I haven't, but I would if I found that something that would make me happy and still be able to meet expenses, even if it meant doing without extras.

Re: Career change?

I did after I got laid off. I decided to take a course on Medical billing and got a job on LI. I was making 1/5 of what I was making in NYC but I knew that I was starting from the bottom. Harry and I were doing ok with the cut in pay but we knew that it would have been a LONG time before we could afford a house.

Unfortunatly, medical billing (maybe it was the crappy company) turned out not to be my forte, so my girlfriend hooked me up with a job back in NYC. Of course my salary increased, but I am also enjoying what I am doing.

Good Luck! You can do it!

I am considering going back for my masters in education this September. It would be a huge paycut for us for me to become a teacher, not to mention the zero salary I would be bringing in as a full time student for a year. We are saving like crazy now to prepare for the possibility of one income for a year.

I would also if it made me happy, and I knew there would be a future in it. Right now it would be a bad time with saving for the wedding and stuff...but it would be worth it for me to get out of my current company...
