Casey is in BIG trouble

Casey is in BIG trouble

My wonderful DH decided that, at 7 months old, Casey is mature enough to stay downstairs while I am in the shower in the morning. Usually, I get up and walk her, then put her back in the crate and go shower. Well, since he gets home around 4 every day, he said that when he is home, he lets her hang out and she is fine. Well, this morning, I came downstairs and she ATE my couch pillow. Brand new. Not the seat pillow, but the pillow that comes with it. I showed it to her and told her NO several times and then ignored her (thats what I read to do). I can always go to Seamans and get a replacement pillow but it annoyed me. She is obviously not ready to be out on her own.

I really feel like when will I ever be able to trust her alone? Will she calm down after her spaying?

ETA when she tore apart the pillow she ate the pull part of the zipper - i hope it comes out in her poop

Bad Casey!!!! and I hope you gave your DH a nice 'I told you so' ! I think 7 months is still a bit young to be trusted alone - she's still a curious puppy and wants to investigate EVERYTHING! We aren't planning on trusting Golem on his own until he's at least a year old, even then we'll have to see. After seeing the things he gets into while I'm standing right next to him, I can't imagine letting him on his own any time soon!

Funny thing about the times of day and a puppy's energy level though - I see the same thing with Golem! He'll be 6 months old next week, and when Craig is home with him in the morning, he'll just hang out, sleep on his bed, or chew on his rawhide toys. BUT, once he's been in the crate all day and I get home at 7 - he is like a living ball of pent up energy!!!! He's crazy sometimes, it drives me nuts that I have the more difficult time of day with Golem when he spends his morning and afternoon being a good boy for Daddy!! He eventually clams down, but there is a noticable difference in his energy levels depending on what time of day it is!

Re: Casey is in BIG trouble

We have a dog who was always getting into trouble, and we found the only way he behaves is if he is tired. Which for us means at least an hour of activity (running, playing at the park, brisk walks) a day.
Dogs are meant to be active all day, so we have to find ways to keep him stimulated mentally too. We try new toys, putting food in toys he has to work to get them out, and tricks and training daily.
It was FH's decision to get an active breed, so now we live with the consequences. But we love him and wouldn't trade him for anything.

I know 7 months is still a baby - what was my DH thinking

Marcie & Helena - Casey is a FIREBALL of energy at night....I guess because she is in the crate all day. Since we built the fence in the yard, its been better I will admit.

Are yours like this? Marcie, your Casey may still be too young and of course is still nipping, but Helena - is Golem nipping still?

I am going nuts! I try to be patient with her bc she is a baby but it hurts!! And I want her to learn manners

ETA I am going to Petsmart this weekend and getting more 'active' toys for her.

They go through phases. Goldens are known chewers also.
Think about it this way, they are adults at one so you have a teen on your hands there.
Also from about 5-10 months their adult teeth are in but the dogs need to chew to 'set the teeth into the jaw' and they like chewing on different textures.
As far as the zipper, it sounds gross but you really need to keep an eye out for that.

Golem is EXACTLY like Casey!! He is also in the crate all day, so I know what you're going through! The nipping is still happening, but thankfully it's not as bad as it was about a month ago! We've just been very persistent with correcting him when he nips at us. He knows he's not supposed to bite, but he's also a stubborn male Rottie, so he's always testing us to see what he can get away with - like we'll forget or something! I notice the nipping is more frequent when I know he's lost a tooth - just the other night he lost another tooth and he was a little nippier than usual.

As for the manners - wasn't Casey in classes a while back? Maybe she needs to go back for a new training course to keep her stimulated and busy? Also rememebr that dogs aren't really mature until 1 year old, and some even more after that (Rotties aren't adults until 2yrs!) So expect your pup to go through this annoying teenage adolescent phase for a little while! I just keep telling myself it's just a phase and he won't always be like this - and it seems to work....most of the time anyway

Yes, they love to chew but the difference is that they are very smart and can be taught what is allowed to be chewed on.
FH's aunt has one who is pretty old now and that dog ripped kongs apart, bent quarters in half, etc. So her toy that withstnads those jaws? A bocci ball.

Consider yourself lucky...the first time we left Baby alone she at the couch. (Tore a huge hole right in the center of the leather seat)...Couch before Baby got to it in pic.

Yes, she was in a 'basic training' class at Petsmart. They taught her how to sit, lay down, walk on the leash etc. But we wanted her to attend the advanced class and it is not on the weekends I will have to look into it again, maybe my DH can take her during the week since he gets home from work early in the day. I dont have to be there although I would love to!

Oh NO! The couch? Yikes! She is so beautiful - golden lab?

PS - I found the zipper it was on the floor and luckily I got it before she did last night.

Yup, thanks, she's a yellow lab. My big nutjob! Glad you found the zipper!
