Cash or check anyone?

Cash or check anyone?

So Ladies, I know we would probably all prefer cash or checks as gifts for the wedding. IS there a 'politically correct' way of asking for cash only? It may be a bit ridiculous but I want to be honest with my guest, I'm trying to purchase a house!

Unfortunately there is no nice way to say cash only. But if your buying a house checks might work in your favor. FH & I just bought a place and we had to account for every single penny we used for a down payment.

I think money is pretty standard on long island now. I've haven't been to a wedding around here in years where there were gifts. In other states things are very different. In a joking manner years ago when talking to friends who live out of state i've mentioned to them that its only money on long island. So i'm hoping my out-of-towners don't bring presents. Its gotta be money only. I'm not having a gift table lol. Just a card cage :)

so you mean cash or check instead of an actual gift gft?

These days I feel like the gift gifts are reserved for engagement parties and showers. It's usually standard to give $ at a wedding. I can't even recall a wedding I've been to where someone bought an actual gift.

good question..!!FH and I were talking about this the other day...maybe there's a way to put somewhere on the registry cards, 'cash gifts are greatly appreciated' but would that be too tacky?

ITA. Money is usually given at weddings now and gifts are usually given at the bridal shower.

I don't think there is an appropriate way to say, 'Cash and Checks Only'. But I don't think you really have anything to worry about.

As I have discovered, it's only the NYC area that it has become common to have checks/cash at the wedding rather than gifts. But I have seen it done to request money only.

Friend of mine on her registry page of the website put a statement saying that because they live in a small apartment in NYC they don't have room for large items, and a preferred gift was a check.

I agree. I think its more common upstate and out of state to give GIFTS. but on LI I dont think i have really ever seen actual gifts, unless the giver if from OOT

honestly - I am having an e-party, and I would rather cash of check for that, but i knwo we are going to be getting stuff from our registry. I am only telling people that ask if I am registered, what store it is lol

No. There's no tactful way to do this. Gifts are gifts and no one's obligated to give you anything at all, so they can give you whatever they choose.

It is asian custom to only give money at the wedding and my FH says he's never been to a wedding where people brought gifts...I'm hoping people will just follow this for my wedding.

That being said, I won't be telling anyone to give money either. If I get a gift, so be it. It won't ruin my day.

I agree, there really is no nice way to say it...unless it's family and you're just blunt with eachother.

You can't ask for cash BUT you can do the following:

1. have your family and bridal party 'hint' to people that you prefer money over gifts

2. set up a honeymoon registry ... that way, people can still feel like they're giving gifts, but in reality you get cash out of it

I think in NY cash is pretty common at a wedding. Gifts are for the shower.

I really don't think there's a tasteful way to ask for money only.

Agreed.

Do mention it to your bridal part and parents. That way if anyone asks, they will get your preferred answer.

I think word of mouth is the best way to make this known. I dont think putting it in writing anywhere is a good idea. I know BBB give you money back if you return gifts from your registry. I just called yesterday to make sure they were still doing this and the manager said they are. So that way if you register there for stuff you really dont want or need you can return it for the cash you really wanted

Don't register.

word of mouth.

only 'tactful' ways of doing it.
