Should you give more or less depending on how much the reception costs or how well you know the person?
Do you expect to break even on the reception?

Re: Cash Presents
I'd base it more on how well you know the person, I'd give someone I am closer with more than someone I am not as close with.
When the wedding is out of state, I tend to give a registry gift (like a place setting or some crystal) since that's what they do.

However I do not feel it is my responsibility to cover my plate. If the couple wants an expensive wedding, they should not expect guests to pay for their choice.
i totally agree with this! its not my choice where the couple has their wedding- people should plan weddings they can afford, and not expect guests to pay them back for it.... we give what we feel is good based on how close we are to the couple, not on the wedding they planned.
LOL i guess i'm a little bitter becasue we got NOWHERE NEAR what we paid for the wedding- we had a couple families of 5 and 6 people ( parents and their ADULT children) who gave us $150 for all 6 people.... we also had a family of 4 who RSVPd yes, but didn't show up, and gave us $75 for all 4. those were meals we paid for that didn't get eaten. i'm not ungrateful by any means, but it just really showed that you can't count on anything...

Re: Cash Presents
I give what I can afford based on how well I know the person. When my sister got married in '04 I spent a small fortune on her, but she was my sister, and I was not saving for my own wedding (or anything else for that matter). I had a very good friend (friends with both bride & groom for 10 years) get married in 1999 - one month after I got a job after being unemployed for 3 years (I was in school). I would have loved to have given them $$$$$$, but I just didn't have it.
As for breaking even on the reception - I have no such expections. If someone gives me $25, or someone gives me $250 - I will be equally appreciative and grateful - but most of all, I will be happy that they cared enough to say 'yes' to my invitation. Even though I am planning my own wedding and have a fair idea of what the costs are at various reception halls, if I was invited to a wedding at Oheka (the most expensive place I can think of) I would NOT adjust the monetary value of my gift because of the location. JMO, but if a bride can afford the $10K site fee for Oheka, she is not expecting my gift to help cover the costs - nor should she. It was her decision to chose that location and all the costs associated it with it - just as it was my decision to chose my location and all the costs associated with it.
