Should you give more or less depending on how much the reception costs or how well you know the person?
Do you expect to break even on the reception?

Re: Cash Presents
DH and I give everyone the same amount (usually $200). If I'm in the bridal party, then I give more.
As far as my own reception, our guests were generous, but I didn't really expect to get x amount, you know?

Re: Cash Presents
Is that $200 from the two of you or $200 each?
I actually haven't been to many weddings as I am one of the first to go amongst my friends!

Re: Cash Presents
we give what we can afford, not based on where the reception is.
as far as breaking even... we got more than the reception cost, but definitely not what we spent on the entire wedding.

We haven't been to many weddings since we're the first of my friends and maybe the 2nd or 3rd of his to get married. I don't expect to break even but it would be nice.

Re: Cash Presents
I know many people think the standard is $100 per person, but now adays with the cost of weddings, etiquette is to buy back the price of the plate. I usually dont give anything less than $300 ($150 p.p) for FH and I. If we are close with them or in the bridal party we give more.

This is what we do also. FH firmly beleive that a wedding gift should cover the expense of us being there and give something extra to the new couple as a gift.

Re: Cash Presents
i give 250 and up(per couple) but it really depends on how much money i have at the time... sometimes i do factor in how much i think the wedding cost...

Re: Cash Presents
we give about 300 ..unless its someone very close we give more.. you are suppose to cover your plate.. so ususally you think its at least 100.00 per plate and then i give extra as the gift.
someone told me to break even you have to total up the entire cost of your wedding, including rings, honeymoon and then diveid that is how much per person you need to break even which is virtually impossible..people would have to give me 500 each for me to break even ..which is abscurd.. lol

Re: Cash Presents
I tend to give more than just 'covering our plate'. A lot more if it's a close friend or family member. Especially when I know that there are more expenses to a wedding than just the hall.
I actually reminded 2 of my guests of this when they tried to ask me how much I'm paying per head.

We do the same, typically $150 per person and up depending on how close we are to the couple.
However I do not feel it is my responsibility to cover my plate. If the couple wants an expensive wedding, they should not expect guests to pay for their choice.

Re: Cash Presents
I never look at it as covering the cost of the plate. We give what we feel is appropriate, which mainly depends on our relationship with the couple.
