FH and I are already getting wedding gifts in the name Mr. and Mrs. (his last name)...
How can we cash these prior to the wedding . . .Or do we need to wait until I officially change my name with Social Security?
How did everyone else handle this?
Also, what did you do about opening a joint account in your new last name? did you have to wait until after the wedding?
TIA!

Re: Cashing checks in New Name?
my name was not on DH checking account and we deposited checks written out to mr and mrs XXX, with no problem. and if just my name was on it too- I just endorsed it and gave to him to deposit. it shouldnt be a problem!

when you endorsed, did you sign it with your maiden or married last name?

Re: Cashing checks in New Name?
with my married name just as how it was made too, but NONE of my paperwork is in my married name- not even now but I dont think it was a problem b/c it had his last name on it ya know. try it the worst that can happen is that the bank will want a copy of your drivers license and tell them you are getting married, it shouldnt be a problem sometimes they just want added info and possibly your social but you can still deposit them. we have a joint account. and even though it's with my name as it is now, I doubt there will be a problem cashing those checks.

I don't think you can cash it, if it is made out to both Mr. & Mrs., but there should be NO problem depositing it.

Re: Cashing checks in New Name?
We did it after the wedding, but we combined our bank accounts before the wedding. I didn't change my name and we did have checks made out to Mr. & Mrs. The bank deposited those when we showed them a copy of our marriage certificate with no problem.
Oh, and I forgot to say, even the ones that were made out to Mr. & Mrs., I signed my maiden name.

I'm going to chime in being the banker and all...
A bank will not change your last name until you've changed it with social security. At least they are not SUPPOSED to. Whatever name they are paying interest to is the name that should read on the account. So usually you have to show proof of your name change, (marriage license) and a copy of your new social security card reflecting your married name in order to change the name on your bank account. There are banks where everyone in the branch literally knows you, your parents, and siblings and will just 'do it' to accomodate you so there are exceptions. Even thought they are not supposed to.
As for this person who gave you a check made payable to 'Mr & Mrs. they were trying to be cute, but should really get a clue. It's really not supposed to be excepted, although it depends what teller you get at the window. I would take it, provided you both sign the back with your current names, and show me ID. Then it's up to the maker of the check (the person who gave you the check) to accept the endorsement. Which whoever gave you the check should be fine with it anyway. Banks don't check endorsements unless it's over 5K usually depending on the size of the bank.
You all probably didn't need to know this, but I'm happy to help those who need more financial banking advice. Just FM me.

Re: Cashing checks in New Name?
i make all my checks out to Mr. OR Mrs. xxx. i was told by a married friend that she had trouble cashing some checks because they wanted proof. if it's 'OR', either can endorse it. that way there's no problems!
