Casual China vs. Formal China (poll included)

Casual China vs. Formal China (poll included)

If you don't mind me asking, how much were your per plate or place setting.....

For Casual?

For Formal?

I'm only asking b/c is it really necessary to have both? Am I really going to regret not having formal like people are telling me?

Of course I found a formal place setting we love for $119 per place setting- but if I put that on my registry, isnt that considered a bit Obnoxious??? Is it rude to put something on your registry that is so expensive?

I seem to be the only person who thinks like this.....?:

It seems like the majority of the fine china at Fortunoff was in the $110 per setting range so I don't think $119 is ridiculous at all. FFIL went to a wedding where the settings were $500 a piece if that makes you feel better!

As for whether you'll regret not getting it, I'm not sure. It's definitely something that is nice to have and something that people do traditionally register for. Maybe the thinking is that they're unlikely to buy it for themselves otherwise!

My settings are $110 per setting for formal china and about $40 per setting for casual, which we plan on using everyday and has more of a stoneware look to it, so I don't think it's what I'd use for holidays. Hope this helps!

I got both because I like the look of formal place setting at holiday dinners.
My formal set was $89.99 per 5-piece and my casual set was $39.99 per 4-piece setting.

I think $119 is completely reasonable. There are plenty of people who register for settings that are $200 and up (see my cousin's registry ) and have no qualms about asking for something so expensive.

Anyway, I think if you like it and are going to use it you should put it on there. There are going to be people who are going to want to spend $100, $150, $200, $400 on you for your shower/wedding and would appreciate getting you something like good china.

I know how you are feeling i really dont think i want to register for formal china. but if i dont 'people are going to talk' i know its stupid but that is what my family is going to do. and some of my co-workers. the china that i picked is lenox casual china so for some reason in my head i think im covered we will see.

I am glad to see i am not the only one who is feeling this way.

I registered for both--but I knew my family wanted to buy us something fancy. My grandmother bought most of our palce settings. I think she really wantd to give us soemthign we'd have for a logn time, so I am glad I registered for it. It wasn't very expensive though, it was by Mikasa, I think it was about $50/place setting.
It is being stored at my mom's but we got something classic that we will still appreciate when we can actually use it.

We registered for both at Fortuneoff's.
For casual we picked Noritake Colorwave in blue and green. Settings were $39.99 each.

For Formal we picked Opal Innocence by Lenox. Settings were $99.95 each.

I think it is nice to have both. This is the only time to be able to do this. I don't think the price you mentioned is that bad at all.

I use my casual china all the time. My formal china has not been used yet. We have no dining room, living in a basement apartment right now but I cannot wait to put them in a China Cabinet one day and actually use them at the holidays.

I say go for the both of them.

My formal China at Fortunoffs is $99 per setting.

My casual dinnerware was $300 for service for 8 (that includes all the extras - hostess set, serving bowls, etc.), also from Fortunoffs.

Casual China --$79.99 with four place settings
--We registered for 2 and received 2 (total of 8 casual settings)

Formal China --$69.99 per 5 piece setting
--We registered for 12 and received 12
---still need the serving pieces

Remember-----this is the one and only time in life you can ask for and will receive these types of items and for these prices.....don't think you're being 'greedy'---it's what you're 'supposed' to do for your wedding. Good luck!!
