FH and I live together and we are trying to figure out what to do with our 1 year old kitty-Lucy while we are on our honeymoon. (One week) My parents HATE animals so they are out of the question. His father I think is a bit untrustworthy. He tends to go outside for a smoke and leave the door open- and you know that little Lucy, curious as she is, will just get out.
How long can a cat be left by herself-if someone come to feed her? Any suggestions girls? Help me and Lucy!

is there a kennel or something nearby that can take her while you're gone? do you have a friend she can stay with? whenever we wenet away, my family would leave our cat at home and have someone come by and feed him once a day....worked out pretty well for us, but not everyone is comfortable with that idea

Hire a pet sitter. I am not joking. There are people out there who do this. They will come to your house feed you cat, change the water, and scoop the litter. My sister used to use a lady in rocky point. It was like $25 a day but she also had a dog so it may be cheaper for the cat as the sitter would not have to come by every day. Look on the internet or in the yellow pages. I am having one of my neighbors check in on my cat every other day while we are on our honeymoon.

We are having the same problem. Except, our one cat has just gotten over being sick and needs medicine everyday. So we don't want to inconveinience anyone, plus, it is too difficult to give her her meds. So, we actually booked her a spot in the vet for the three weeks we will be away and that is going to cost us about $24 a day because it is a medical stay. They are usually only $17 a day to keep a healthy cat there. FM me if you want info on the place. But, we are thinking of hiring someone to come in and take care of both cats, instead of putting one in the vet and having someone come over to feed the other. A girl at our vet hinted that she would be willing to come over everyday and feed our cats and give the one her meds. Maybe try calling your vet and see if they have someone that would be interested in cat sitting while your away.

If your cat doesn't need to take medicine, see if you can get a friend to come over once a day to feed her, change her water, and scoop out the litter box. Since you'll only be gone for a week, that should be sufficient. Cats basically can take care of themselves, unlike dogs. Most importantly, either find someone you trust, or stick her in the kennel, because the last thing you want to do on your HM is worry about her. We had the same situation with our cat and we had a cousin come over to take care of her while we were away.

If you cant board her, then I would get a freind to come in every few days to feed her and love her. We are boarding the dog, because dogs are a little more work and kitty will be just fine with visits.:)

It is fine to leave her home and just have someone check on her. That is the beauty of owning a cat. I have left my cats for 8 days that way and we are planning on leaving them for two weeks for our HM. My sister or my parents check on them every other or every day.

When I was younger, I used to cat-sit for a friend who traveled a lot .. they had a bunch of cats .. many of which were indoor, but a couple that were not .. they'd have me stay at the house.
Anyway .. there are all kinds of pet feeders/waterers on the market now ... you could look into that. Depending on the cat .. you may not be able to go a couple of days without having someone go in and feed it .. some cats will eat all the food that's left out for them in one day .. or if you try to overcompensate by putting out a ton of food .. you'll be wasting a lot. Definitely try to have someone check in once a day .. they should have fresh, clean water given every day anyway. As for the feeders/waterers .. I'm always paranoid about those .. what if they stop working and there's no one to check in on kitty??? If you can't have someone stop in every day .. maybe the feeder/waterer with someone every other day???

I would not board your cat. They are in a small cage around other animals and it must be horrible for them. As long as you have a friend come over and put down food and clean the liter than you are fine. They wouldn't even need to come over everyday...we have left the cats alone for 2 nights at a time and they are fine. Just make sure they have a lot of food and water.

we left our cat for a week once. If you can't find a sitter to change the water and feed them, the get those feeder timers and water circulators, and set up extra litter boxes, and close the doors to rooms you don't trust them.

ok there are these great thing out there called food timers - they sell them at foster and smith's you can set up to a week of dry food in this round thing and everyday at the same time it opens - as long as you have someone drop by every 2 days to change water and scoop the box the kitty will be fine by herself - just make sure you have a reasonable temp in the house so kitty isnt tooo hot or too cold - i watched a friends cat for 2 weeks - we went over every second day to do water and change the box and it was fine -
