this isnt considered to be the gratuities for the dinner reception, is it? im reading that 15-20% gratuity for the catering manager to divide evenly amoung staff is acceptable. this is like, more than what our service charge was when we booked.
im trying to put everything into our budget - this is getting to be sooo expensive.

Re: catering 'service charge'
It may vary by venue but I know with mine our contract says 20% svc fee and that does not include tipping the matrie d or bridal attendant. That is extra! It adds up fast

Re: catering 'service charge'
I thought that the service charge was essentially the tips for the wait/bar staff and the BM and attendant are tipped over and above.

Re: catering 'service charge'
im inclined to think its not their tip. but rather, their pay for working the event, before gratuity.
anyone know differently?

Re: catering 'service charge'
my RH states that the service charge is basically paying the cost for running the place, such as your valte, coat check, etc. and does not include tips

This! And my RH added tax and then the 20%. We looked at a bunch and the service fee was always the same - 20%

Re: catering 'service charge'
One Catering Manager told me and FH that years ago, in order to make the price look better, they made the pp charge lower, and added like a 10% service charge, which is now 20% at most places. As me and FH say, it's all bullsh--..

We didn't pay a service charge at all! Floral Terrace and Sandcastle do not charge the 20% service charge everyone else does! We saved $6000 like that! Amazing I tell you! If anyone wants info FM me. One wedding at a time and no service charge? Yup, we loved everything about it and when we asked him how much it was with the 20% service charge the BM laughed at us and told us that places charging 20% should be illegal!

But then do you have to tip everyone after anyway? I'm just curious... I don't mind if it's for tips I'd have to put in at the end anyway (at mine that's how it is) but then I tip the MD and attendant more (they said typically people do this) which is the same as most of the other girls it seems.

Re: catering 'service charge'
every venue i went to visit told me about this crazy *cant explain what it really is that makes sense to me* charge. I factored it into by budget already. i wish there was a way to negotiate that!

Re: catering 'service charge'
crazy... too bad the taxes cant be done before the service charge - whatever it is.
does the 20% gratuity get charged to our subtotal (ie. before taxes and the service charge) or our final total??? or do you calculate a standard amount per table?
