Did you do a unity candle?? FH dosent want to do one but I do. The Deacon said that they are actually not part of the Catholic right and should not be done in a Roman Catholic service. He said the unity candle is actually a pagan tradition.

Re: Catholic Brides
We're not doing one, but that was personal preference. Our priest asked us if we wanted it in our service so I guess it has become acceptable.

Re: Catholic Brides
i did it. my Priest asked us if we were doing it and he didnt have any problems with it at all. they even made sure we covered it at the rehearsal. i guess each Church is different.

Re: Catholic Brides
I am not doing it only because we are doing a memorial candle, and I didn't want it to take away from that.
My friend who got married a month ago did it though....

Re: Catholic Brides
Actually, the real reason we're not doing it is because a few people warned me that my FH would probably knock over the candle and either light the altar on fire, or me!

Re: Catholic Brides
We are doing it. In our church planning book it gives the option to do it or not to do it. AFter reading the description of it, I thought it was a very sentimental idea. It is supposed to be a reminder of the candles at your baptism(and you can use those candles if you want). So we are going to have our two mothers light the side candles at the beginning of the mass to represent our two families and when we were baptized and then we will join the two flames into the big candle after the vows to symbolize that we are married and our families are one. I thought it was very sweet when I read what it symbolizes. We are going to play the'Irish Wedding Song' as we light it.

Re: Catholic Brides
We're not doing it but, a lot of my friends who have been married in the Catholic church have done it. I think I'd be too nervous to do something with fire with all of those people watching me

Re: Catholic Brides
We're doing one (bought them at Fantasyland), but our Church said it was optional, but we wanted to do it.
