Catholic brides.. do/did you HAVE to get married in a Church?
I'm in a pickle.. or a tuna salad.....
I'm Catholic (not a great one) and my FW was baptozed Catholic but raised Lutheran. I have always loved the Church. It's part of me.
But we want to get married outside.. so far from what I've read it looks like it's gotta be in the Church. We won't change our plans.
Have any of you faced a dilemna like this?.. What did you do?

You only have to get married IN a church if you want a priest to marry you. There are 'renegade' priests who willmarry you outside of the church...but technically the church won't 'recognize' the marriage. (I met with a Monsignor this weekend.)

I am not catholic but I know you don't have to get married in a church. And there are lots of priests that will marry you.

I think you can seek permission to marry elsewhere ....you should check with your parish priest...if i remember correctly: your priest writes a letter to the bishop...needless to say, i don't think it happens often

I am Cathlolic and so is FI. We are not getting married at a church. My parents and his parents were fine with our decision.

My FH is Catholic, I'm Jewish. We're being married out doors at our hall and we're having a Catholic Priest and a Rabbi. I got their names through the hall and they do lots of ceremonies together. You shouldn't have too much of a hard time finding an officiant.

This is what I've been told as well.

I don't know if ALOT of priests will marry you outside of the church...I had a lot of trouble finding someone to marry us IN the church!! But, there are some who will do it.

After 12 years of Catholic school, I know it would mean a lot to me and my family. Oh well.. I'm not gonna worry. I'll just find a solution.
I thank everybody for your posts!

Perhaps you and FW should have a small church wedding on a different date and then have your ceremony outdoors and have a priest offer a blessing like you want.

I had this problem - the ONLY way you can get around the in church rule is if you are of different faiths, and even then, they give you a hard time. I had a family friend (a Monsignor) show me paperwork from the Bishop stating that we could not get married outside of the church so that I wouldn't think he was just telling me no because my family wanted him to.

I have a very close family friend who's a priest and he's like.. I would love to.. but I can't.. I don't understand this. It IS in God's country.. Nature.. but I know the Church reasoning. Well.. just gonna have to find a way. No doubt, this'll be tough.

I was serious about the 'renegade' priests - that was the term the Monsignor (FH's cousin) used. They are priests, they've just strayed. He even said you could look them up in the yellow pages.

Good luck. Personally, I think it's BS that the church won't recognize it.
PS - absolutely NO offense taken!

I am catholic (not a good one either), and FH is not religious at all. I wanted a church, he wanted Elvis. So we comprimised, favoring me a bit more, and we are getting married in a community church. My father was a little upset at first, but he accepted it and was happy that we are at least getting married in a church.
