What do you do if you want your ceremony outside at the same place as the reception, but ultimately want your wedding to be recognized by the cathoic church? Can you have a separate ceremony just at the church a week later? does anyone know if the church has rules about this stuff? Every place i went to told me that the church won't recognize an outdoor ceremony, even if a priest does it. Any advice??

Re: catholic brides not doing the church thing?
The only answer I have to your question is that you are right, the Church will not recognize any outdoor ceremony. As for whether or not the Church would be willing to allow you to have a ceremony at the church afterwards, I'm really not sure. Would you consider having the church ceremony before? The best thing to do would be to contact the Diocese and see what they say about it.

I was going to do it before but then my friend told me she thinks my actual wedding day ceremony, which I want to be the main event, will be anti-climactic because we will have already said our vows, and i think she's right. I know, I need to contact the church.

its true, unless you get married in a church the catholic church wont recognize your marriage...Also you will see a priest wont do it, you can find retired priests, and other officiants who will perform your ceremony.
There are people who got married in a church after already being married, alot of them that i heard about were married at city hall or something like that so im sure it would be the same

I had this conversation with my FH bc I wanted an outdoor ceremony... but he wasnt having it bc he is very traditional.... He went to his family priest and asked and he said the church would never allow him to marry us outside. .. I was so upset... but I cannot say no to FH because this is the only thing he wants....so I had to agree to a chruch wedding....

My FH and I are already married and have been for over a year, we will be getting re-married in a church in 3 weeks (eeeeks I cannot believe its so close!)
So... it is def possible, just ask the church the different steps you need to take.
Good Luck!

this is really good to know. I'm catholic (FH isn't) and we're doing the outside thing only b/c it got so difficult to find a Catholic church to do it on Memorial Day and without being a member. I'm glad to see that we can do it later

A Catholic priest, retired or not, will not perform a wedding outside of the church (at least not in the US) because it will not be recognized by the US Catholic Church. You can get married by the church at a later date but you will need to go through Pre-Cana prior to having the church wedding so you have to factor in that time prior to having the church ceremony.

I'm pretty active at my church, and I know that for a lot of couples that opt for outdoor weddings, elopements, etc, they can, at a later date, have a rededication ceremony and then their marriage will be recognized by the church.

my outdoor ceremony can still be performed by a retired priest so that it's sort of like a catholic wedding; the priest will do it regardless but it won't be recognized in the church, just legally.

You can most definitely have an outdoor ceremony and get married again later on at the church. The church calls it a rededication ceremony. They understand that people elope and make other arrangements, so they are usually fine with doing a church ceremony for couples already married.

I am not getting married in the Church but the officiant who is performing my ceromony is a Monsignor who is helping me get my marriage recognized by the Church-- I have to get approval by the Diocese of my Church to marry outside... which he is actually taking care of for me. I just had to fill out certain papers about my Sacrements

wow really? I didn't think anyone would do that - even my RH said it would be a lot of money and aggravation to get it recognized. i am okay with a priest officiating and doing this whole rededication ceremony after the fact. Will probably do pre-cana before my actual wedding though. There is no time limit right? And would we need to bring our marriage license to the church ceremony?
thanks for all the input - you guys really put my mind at ease!

Wow, really? Thats great...I had always heard it near impossible to get permission to have a Catholic wedding outside the church.

To be honest, 'because we just wanted to get married outside' isn't usually a valid excuse for wanting your marriage recognized in the church, but not actually getting married there. You should really discuss this with a priest before you make your plans. There may be something they can do.

I had an outdoor ceremony performed by a Catholic priest & our marriage is valid with the Catholic church.
Our priest was Father Bob Allmen & you can call him 63l-728-2633.

OOC, was it an interfaith wedding?
Interfaith weddings (non-Christian and Catholic) can be held outside.

Nope! We are both Roman Catholics and we had a Catholic ceremony. Pic of Father Bob below (hopefully it'll post)

the only reason we're doing it outside of the church is because they would not do it not because we didn't want to. The decision to do it outside came b/c we literally were forced to come up with anothr option.
Trust me we tried about 5 churches and as I'm not a member of a parish (just moved back to NY after 8 years in VA) no chuch would perform the ceremony for us. Particularly b/c the date is on Memorial Day Monday.
We didn't want to become members of a church simply in hopes of having our ceremony there, find out later that they couldn't accomodate us and be back to square one.

Re: catholic brides not doing the church thing?
I can see why you wouldn't just want to join just to join. And Memorial Day weekend is tough Is there a particular church that you do want to join? If so, maybe you can do your ceremony and later on have a rededication at that church.
