What do you do if you want your ceremony outside at the same place as the reception, but ultimately want your wedding to be recognized by the cathoic church? Can you have a separate ceremony just at the church a week later? does anyone know if the church has rules about this stuff? Every place i went to told me that the church won't recognize an outdoor ceremony, even if a priest does it. Any advice??

I had an outdoor ceremony performed by a Catholic priest & our marriage is valid with the Catholic church.
Our priest was Father Bob Allmen & you can call him 63l-728-2633.
OOC, was it an interfaith wedding?
Interfaith weddings (non-Christian and Catholic) can be held outside.
Nope! We are both Roman Catholics and we had a Catholic ceremony. Pic of Father Bob below (hopefully it'll post)
wow really? were you a member of his parish? would it be really random if I called him? I went to my church last night to register and just don't like the whole idea of having to interview with the priest (who i've never met b/c i'm new to the neighborhood) and going through all that. I just want my marriage recognized so i can raise our kids catholic, but i don't want the fancy church wedding.
someone said with a special dispensation from the bishop (and a lot of money) an outdoor ceremony would be recognized.

we are doing both... so in the end will have two wedding dates...
getting married at the church the day before and then the next day at the RH...
we have lots of OOT guests and we wanted it to be recognized by the church and at the same time we wanted everything at one place so they guests wouldnt miss the ceremony...

It's worth a shot, I'd say. You might also call Msgr. Lisante at St. Thomas the Apostle in West Hempstead. I know he does a lot of interfaith weddings outside of the church, so he may be able to help you out some. When you call the rectory there, ask to speak to Elaine, his assistant, and she'll give him the message.

I can see why you wouldn't just want to join just to join. And Memorial Day weekend is tough Is there a particular church that you do want to join? If so, maybe you can do your ceremony and later on have a rededication at that church.
I have my old church that I did all my sacrements with that I will probably use for the rededication...now that I know its an option...

Bob Allmen is not in communion with the Roman Catholic Church. Sorry-but if I was you I would go talk to a VALID Roman Catholic Priest and discuss this.
This man does not perform valid sacramental ROMAN CATHOLIC marriages.

I was going to point that out as well. If you are a Roman Catholic you must talk to a Roman Catholic Church about your marriage. There are several Catholic Churches which are not under the rule of Rome or the Pope.

sorry maybe i'm ignorant but what's the difference if it's recognized in the Catholic church vs. Roman Catholic? why aren't they one and the same. And it says his marriages are all sacramental and legal so isn't it recognized as a sacrament of marriage?

Maybe this depends on what diocese you are in, but my Aunt is a Nun and she told me that Roman Catholics can be married outside.
My siblings and I were all baptized at home by my cousin, who is a Jesuit priest, he is retired now, but I can try to email him and ask if it's a Church rule or a diocese thing.
...Ok, I just checked, it is per diocese, so it depends where you practice.

You should really check with your diocese. There are some that will perform Catholic ceremonies outside of the church and it will be valid, but it all depends.

Re: catholic brides not doing the church thing?
We are getting married at OWG b/c I loove the outdoors/gardens etc. and then after the honeymoon we are having a small ceremony in the church. Just us, our kids and the priest. I am catholic but my home church is in E.Hampton and we are so new to the area where we bought our home that we haven't become active in a church in our community yet. So you can have it both ways. Just talk to the church ahead of time so that you know all the necessary things you have to do prior and so you pick a date important to you to have the second ceremony. Good Luck!

A baptism is not required to take place in a church (but it is def. preferred). Alot of times baptisms are perfomed in a hospital, if a baby is sick, etc.
It is not a Diocese decision, Canon law requires the marriage to take place in a church or oratory. The bishop may dispense from this for good reason, but it will almost never be for a reason like 'I want to be married on the beach or I want to be married in a garden'. A dispensation is usually granted when it is an interfaith marriage and the ceremony will occur at the other person's place of worship.
The reason for this is that the marriage is a public ceremony (for the church to witness) and this is a sacred event for God and He is being called to witness the exchange of vows between two people and to sanctify the marriage.

Some people have spun off from the RC church and started their own churches-like this man Allmen-but they call them Catholic, which can be very deceiving.
If you are a Roman Catholic you are under Rome and the Pope. Your parish is part of a diocese, which is run by a Bishop, etc.
A ceremony performed by someone like Allmen is certainly legal, but would not be blessed by the RC church. It would be like marrying at city hall.

Re: catholic brides not doing the church thing?
To echo what many others have said, if you are ROMAN catholic, you can NOT get married outside. The Roman Catholic Church is under the Vatican and the Dioceses in the United Stares are under that....
In addition, since you are both Catholics, it will even be more difficult for you to make this work. Yes, it is true that Roman Catholics have gotten married outside, but that is usually because it is an inter-faith marriage. For exmaple, my SIL married a Jew and his family would not go into a church, so they did their Pre-Cana and the priest in diocese was given approval to witness their wedding outside with the rabbi.
is it really important for you to have a Nuptial Mass or ceremony?? If it is, there will be a church that will marry you on a Memorial Day.... you may have to investigate a little bit and actually join a parish....although, issues like this is why you're supposed to make your CHURCH arrangements BEFORE you make the social arrangements.
If you do decide to get married outside, you can have a 'priest' say it, but i can guarantee that he will not be a priest in communion with the ROMAN Catholic Church. He left the Church. REAL retired priests are still priests, they still celebrate the SAcraments, including saying Mass at least once a day. the only thing that makes them retired is that they no longer work full-time for a parish. they still won't marry a couple outside of the church if they're both Catholic,
If you do decide to get married outside and LATER want it recognized, you will need what is a CONVALIDATION. It is not a 'rededication' as previously posted. This is basically the Church recognizing your marriage after you've been married by a justice of the peace, a judge, etc. etc. You MUST meet with a parish priest who will get that process started for you. once that is approved a ceremony or Mass is set up for you....
