My church told me that the most that the catholic church can ask is for $500, so that is how much we are paying to the church. Plus we have to pay $250 for the organist and singer.

We are paying $350, plus 150 for the organist and I think if we wanted to add a singer it would be an additional $200, so $550.00 total.

Technically you are receiving something in return for the fee - use of the church property and services. So legally you cannot deduct this on your taxes.

We were asked to give $450. I will try to give more if I can as my church has been very good to my family, particularly my mom during difficult times.

I am probably asking to be crucified here and i really don't mean to sound obnoxious, but a lot of people on these boards complain about the donation to the church. in my opinion, the ceremony should be the most important part of the day. girls on this site will drop $4000 on flowers and well more than a $100.00 a person per plate at a reception hall, but complain about giving their church a reasonable amount... most of which goes to church programs and expenses and to the church musicians who often depend on weddings to make some extra money since they do not make much as it is. I don't know, I guess I just don't get it. If people can't give the Church a nice donation on their wedding day without complaining, maybe you should just get married elsewhere. and really, I don't mean to offend anyone, it's JMO. thanks...

I agree with you.
Also, if you look at the fees Rabbi's, other officiants and halls charge for ceremonies - these amounts are not unreasonable. I gave $450 for my church fee and another $100 for Pre-Cana/FOCCUS and was happy to do so.

When we met with the priest the first time, he did not even bring this up, but when we got home and read the paper work it says a suggestive fee of $500 and if you want music it's an extra $200.00.

Well, we are going to contact him soon, b/c this is ridiculous, I mean really...

I just read Diana's post. You do have some strong points here. My FH were not members of this church, we just became members. I think that if we talk to our priest, he know we are basically paying for this ourselves, that he may work with us. I pray that he will anyway..

The church tells you what the 'donation' is. Mine was $500 + $50 for the singer.

I dont think you get to decide the amount of donation. I think they tell you how much you have to Donate I have a meeting with the priest in a few weeks.
