Catholic Church Question

Catholic Church Question

I know this is probably a stupid question, but I'll ask anyway.

I'm having a catholic cermony, not a mass. Is the unity candle still done? If so, is it generally provided by the church? Or Do we purchase it?

Thanks so much!!!

Re: Catholic Church Question

A unity candle is not necessary, with or without a mass. It's actually a relatively newer tradition. I'm not having a mass, nor am I doing a unity candle.

If you choose to do one, you must provide your own. The church does not provide it.

Re: Catholic Church Question

You can still do it whether it's ceremony or mass, and like lsorrent said, it's more of a new tradition with symbolism than anything religious. We're going to make a bouquet offering to the Blessed Mother instead because we feel that it's more special to us. You have to provide the unity candle. They suggest using your baptism candles as the side candles if you still have them.
