Catholic Church Restrictions

Catholic Church Restrictions

I know I posted about this already but I need help!! I just spoke to the Deacon who's going to be officiating our ceremony. He did confirm for me that at least he'd be willing to stay after the ceremony so the photographer can re-pose us for good pics, but then he told me something that upset me all over again - the guests cannot take ANY pictures - not just pictures with no flash - NONE AT ALL!!! I have SERIOUS issues with this! Are any of you getting married at a Catholic church (preferably in Western Suffolk or in Nassau Counties) that don't have this many restrictions??? I can't take this and I am seriously going to cry.

What church is this?? I know my church has some restrictions like you can throw rose petals in the church, you cant tie anything to the pews, we cant bring in outside musicians etc. Yet we have to pay a million bucks to use the place for a half hour..i dont get it
But they never said anything about flash photography not being allowed. That would suck

Re: Catholic Church Restrictions

It is actually very typical for Catholic churches to not allow flash photography or any photography at all inside of the church.

Being Catholic myself, I was really annoyed over all the restrictions the church had as well as how expensive it was to get married.....Totally unecessary.

I ended up getting married in DH old church with an outside minister. It was awesome. People were allowed to take pictures. My photographer got some amazing close-ups of our ceremony and I was able to use pew buckets and rose petals outside, my own music, non religious readings etc......This was so much more important to me than getting married inside of the church with all of their rules and cookie cutter ceremony

Good luck with your decision....follow your heart

i got married at st francis of assisi in Greenlawn and they had no restrictions except no throwing anything after the ceremony-(rose petals rice etc). bubbles would have been fine but i wasn't into it.

the church i will be getting married in allows photography but they ask that the guests stay in the pews...i guess it varies from one church to the next

Re: Catholic Church Restrictions

We had no picture restrictions - just that the photographer couldn't go on the altar. I have never heard of no photography though. I would discuss with the pastor of the church and clarify that.

What is up with Catholic priests? I think they all make up their own rules, I swear. I have heard horror stories of what priests have said to couples that want to get married. But then you have your good ones too, who give no fuss at all.
This is why I am not getting married in the Catholic church. No, actually it's the pre-cana classes that I do not want to go to.....LOL

Re: Catholic Church Restrictions

The only restriction we had at my sister's wedding is that no one except Bride, Groom, MOH, BM can be up on the altar. Photographers are not allowed to stop on the altar to take pictures.

Each parish is different and restrict certain things. The one restriction that is true for all parishes is that photographers are not allowed on the altar because it is where the Sacrament is taking place. The sacrament is the important part of a wedding that is why one decides to get married in a church.

Our church allows photos - the only restrictions are that we cannot go back in to take pictures once the ceremony is over which is not a big deal to us at all.

Thank you Tricia! I called them and they said they will do it. The only thing is, the lady wouldn't tell me what (if any) their restrictions are, and we dont need to meet with the priest til January! You're sure there were no restrictions about the photos???

Re: Catholic Church Restrictions

Some advice that has helped out my family and friends: Go to Mass a few times prior to your wedding, especially the one that the priest that will be doing your wedding presides over. After Mass say hello to the priest, talk to him about anything even if its about sports. Priests are more receipting of couples they see at Mass.

For priests and for those that religion is important to them the Mass is the most important part of a wedding. So its a little disheartening when people only go to church for their wedding and then forget about church until they need their children baptized. That's why some parishes are strict.

I doubt this is the only the Catholic Church. Synagogues and Temples are also strict.

Re: Catholic Church Restrictions

my church doesn't have photograph restrictions except maybe the alter part but I have to check.

the only other restriction is no rose petals or rice outside. WE can do birdseed or bubbles.

Re: Catholic Church Restrictions

My Catholic Church is in Queens and there were NO restrictions AT ALL. The only thing the priest requested is that we do not use rice to throw after (which we weren't planning on).

Different parishes have different restrictions. My church allowed photography, but the photographer was not allowed to enter the altar (I completely understood) and there was no throwing of rice outside.

Re: Catholic Church Restrictions

Talk to the head of your church and ask what the rules are for the church. This is NOT a Catholic church thing - must be specific to your church. I got married in a Catholic church and everyone took pics.

FWIW, we did not need to repose any shots after the ceremony... If you have a good photographer, you won't either.
