I am Catholic and FI is Lutheran. We are having a Catholic Mass wedding ceremony. I know technically he isn't supposed to receive communion but he has in Catholic church before and I thought it would be fine on our wedding day. Technically I am learning it is not, but now I am nervous and may just want to do a ceremony if he can't receive. I had my heart set on a mass so this is hard. What are you all doing in this situation??? TIA Jean

Re: Catholics marrying nonCatholics in a mass...
In our church they require us to have our original Catholic Baptismal Certificates. So if he's not Catholic then I don't think you can even have the full mass. I may be totally wrong on this one since I'm only going through my sacrements now. I'm not Catholic but will be by Easter. I learned a lot about this the past few months so send an FM if you want to talk a little more.

Re: Catholics marrying nonCatholics in a mass...
I'm not Catholic (or anything else for that matter) but fi is. We were told very explicitly that while we can choose to have a mass after the vows at the wedding, I cannot participate or take communion, so it's kind of a personal preference. Do I have a mass and watch FH taking communion or do we scrap it altogether and save ourselves 1/2 hour? We went with the latter...the wedding will be beautiful enough, we don't need the mass.
But I agree with jpavig - the original Baptismal certificates are required and you have to be catholic otherwise, no go.

I'm catholic and my FH is also Lutheran. Both of our churches were not helpful or cooperating with us trying to plan our wedding day, so we settled for having the ceremony at the reception.

Re: Catholics marrying nonCatholics in a mass...
Thanks all. The process actually has been really smooth so far...we have all of our baptismal certificates and paperwork in and completed Engaged ENcounter, and are getting our dispensation, etc. They are letting us have a mass even though FI is Lutheran. I may not now depending. I have such a huge gap b/t my ceremony and reception and personally just wanted a mass. THanks again for your input!

Same here I am Lutheran and my FH is Catholic and he had his heart set on having the ceremony at his church...and I was told I can't take Communion so we are going to scrap the whole communion thing also...

Re: Catholics marrying nonCatholics in a mass...
I am Catholic and FH is spiritual (never baptised but he believes in God). Anyways, we're getting married in a Catholic Church. We could have done a full mass, but the priest reccommended against it since FH could not share in the Communion. I was fine with that so no Full Mass for me. If FH was Catholic though I would have done it. But at least now, I can blame the mass thing on the church and not have my mother complain!
