Cats and recliners? A deadly mix or am I paranoid?

Cats and recliners? A deadly mix or am I paranoid?

We are buying a couch (finally) and we want to buy a couch that has a recliner section.

My dad has a similar couch and when we visited my cat crawled under the couch while it was in the 'reclined' position and tried to crawl IN the vacant space when it was in the regular position.
(she's cute but not very bright).

My heart jumps in my throat when I think of her accidentially getting stuck in there and hurt if someone were to close the recliner with her in there. I do not know if I could ever be a peace with it.

I'm wondering if that one incident was idle curiosity or if other cat owners have had a problem with their cats and this type of couch.

My cats go under the recliner- you just have to be careful. My reclining chair is electric so it does not slam shut, it closes pretty slowly so he has a warning.

Thanks for responding Sunny. My DH thinks I'm very weird for being concerned.

How do your guests handle it? Are they aware of the kitties? Has anyone been hurt?

Only one cat goes under there, and he hides when I have company or stays glued to my side.
I would suggest just making sure it is not one that slams shut fast. If it goes in slowly, the cat will know to get out of the way. Also, you will remember to check- it will become a habit.
I would not be worried about him being trapped under there (he would meow and you would find him), I would only worried about him getting squished.

What kind of kitty do you have?

Yes - it is the squished part that freaks me out! 3 Months ago she figured out how to open our accordian closet doors....and her nail got stuck. After a lot of crying, hissing and growling we got her free....but then she continues to try and open the doors! Not the sharpest tool in the shed! (hence my concern)

She is a tabby. She is 6 years old, adorable and nervous around company (so she hides too). I wish I had a scanned photo to share!

I will post this pic yet again, cause I love it!

Let me ask you this - if the couch 'closes' with the cat in there, is there enough room for the cat to not get squished?

Has your cat every gotten closed in?

They are soooooo cute! So nice that they are close to one another. Did you get them at the same time?

My cat never got close in the recliner, but he got closed in the sofa bed. He was fine!

I did not get them together- the orange one is 3 years older than the fluffy one. They love eachother!
