Danielle and I have a t mobile family plan which finally ends next week. We are looking to get away from t mobile because they are the worst cell phone service that I have ever had. They have great customer service, but that is about it.
What cell phone services do you recommend? I know most of you will say Verizon, but im not sure we want to spend $40 a month plus taxes on a cell phone plan. We can get such better deals, on AT&T, or Cingular.
Does anyone have Cingular, At&t, Sprint, or Nextel? Do you recommend it?
Also what phone do you have? Do you recommend it?
If we go with AT&T or Cingular, we are going to go GSM. My sister has it and she loves it.
We need the phone to work well in Levittown, Wantagh, Bellmore, Merrick, Oceanside, And then also on the north shore of long island, Like Port Washington.
Thanks in advance, Scott

Re: Cell Phones and Plans
I know you don't want to hear this, but I have Verizon & would not change it for the world...It might cost a little more then the other plans but Verizon is very reliable...I don't know if you are much of a traveller but with Verizon, I never lose a signal or drop a call...I live in Levittown & service is great...
FH had AT&T and we dropped them bc the service was horrible...We would go to PA & he would not have service or calls were dropped every 5 minutes...He now has Nextel & loves it...To me, the bill is too much $$ (higher then what I have for Verizon)...we were just recently down in SC & he lost service twice while I was up & running....
With Verizon's family plan, you can get 400 minutes plus free nights, weekends & mobile to mobile (other Verizon customers) for $59.99(39.99 for the 1st line & 20 for the additional line) plus taxes....

Re: Cell Phones and Plans
fh has had verizon for the last 8 years - since it was bell atlantic - and he has not had one problem with service. i have cingular and have no complaints per se, but when my contract expires in feb 05 i am joining fh's plan, it just makes sense for us to do it that way. i know that cingular and AT&T merged, but i haven't noticed a change yet.

Re: Cell Phones and Plans
I know Verizon is the best, but I really dont want to shell out $60 plus on a cell phone plan. I want to ween away from the family plan too. It gets too expensive, especially if someone goes over their minutes.
There is a store near our house that has a AT&T contract with 700 minutes, free nights and weekends and other stuff for $14.99 a month plus you get a free phone. For that price, I may go with AT&T. I dont know.

Re: Cell Phones and Plans
My aunt has tons of problems with At&T but my mom has AT&T and loves it. I have used Sprint in the past and it was OK, there were a lot of dead areas, but that was over 3 years ago. Maybe things have improved by then. I currently use Nextel. My plan is $39.99 and I have unlimited nights and weekends and unlimited direct connect, plus 600 regular minutes. It is worth it for me because just about all of my close friends have nextel also. If a lot of your friends don't use Nextel then direct connect is pointless. Taxes are a lot with Nextel though.

Re: Cell Phones and Plans
I have Verizon now and am so happy with it!!!!!!!!!
I had AT&T and Nextel and hated them both. AT&T has horrible service and tons of dropped calls.
Nextel for me wa much more expesnive than Verizon and you get very little reception with them. I constantly was out of range.
Sorry I couldn't tell you what you wanted to hear, but Verizon truly is the best service!!!!

Re: Cell Phones and Plans
Hey...I dont know what I want to hear lol. We are going to go and look today, but I cannot do anything till after the 16th. We want to transfer our numbers over to the new phone. I dont want to have a new phone number again.
First I had AT&T and they were horrible.
I have had Sprint in the past and I hated it, because I never had digital service and i was always roaming. They charged me for roaming.
Then I had At&t again, because someone recommended them. It was good for the first few months and then I started getting dropped calls and everything. Now most of their phones are GSM and they have much better service and reception.
Then Danielle and I got the family plan w/ Tmobile and we regret it. We love our phones but the service stinks. I am going to sell our phones on ebay with all the accessories. I have seen them going for $60 or $70 which is great since we got them for free. We have the Samsung E105.

Re: Cell Phones and Plans
We had nextel but after we got engaged and our contract was up we had to switch to at&t to save money. Nextel was costing us a fortune but the service was GREAT.
Anyway we have had our at&t family plan for a year. Its been ok. Not the worst I've ever had but not as good as my nextel was either. So while I would give a thumbs up to at&t my fh would beg to differ. He works in the city and is constantly not getting service and dropped calls. He has a verizon phone through his job and LOVES it. He gets service in basements and even on the train underground.
I think we will switch back to nextel or possibly verizon after the wedding when we have more money to spare.

Re: Cell Phones and Plans
I had T-mobile and their service sucked out loud, but their customer service was excellent.
I switched to Cingular. Ginormous Mistake. Service sucked, customer service sucked (click here for my review of cingular) . They actually wouldn't let me cancel at first. When I called they asked why I was canceling (after keeping me on hold for 20 minutes) and I said 'Because you're service sucks and I signed up with a new company.' They actually said 'Well we can't cancel your plan becuase you're unhappy.' You can't??? But isn't that why people cancel their plans? Unhappiness? Or do I have to DIE to cancel this plan? So I calmly said 'I signed up with a new company, my contract is over with you guys, please cancel it.' The guy put up such a fight!!
In my opinion I would AVOID CINGULAR LIKE THE PLAGUE!!! Every person I dealt with on the phone was rude, unhelpful and marginally incompetant.
I have Verizon but, you're right, it's expensive... try Nextel or Sprint.
And DON'T go with AT&T because they merged with Cingular.... unless you enjoy being castigated everytime you call customer service with a question or problem.

Re: Cell Phones and Plans
i dont have one single good thing to say about AT&T - customer service and dropped calls - it was all a complete nightmare. and EVERY month i would get an incorrect bill and have to fight with them for hrs to correct it (after they had charged me triple the bill on my CC!) and they wouldnt let me out of my contract. i had sprint and it was OK - not great. i have verizon family share and love it. IMO its worth the $ bc why have a cell phone if you cant rely on it? its more hassle than its worth.

Re: Cell Phones and Plans
I have Verizon and yes it's more expensive but the service area is great - i don't think I've ever had a dropped call. I had AT&T before this and the service areas were really bad - I had SO MANY dead zones. DH has Nextel which he regrets - really expensive and a lot of bad reception areas. As soon as my current contract is up with Verizon we are going to stay with Verizon and do a family plan. My dad had Sprint and hated it - my sister still has it and is eagerly waiting for her contract to finish.
