so in an effort to save money I wanted to do candle centerpieces instead of flowers. Then I started toying around with the idea of maybe having a beautiful vase and then fill it with M&Ms or jelly beans in the two colors I'm using for my color scheme.
what do you think of this idea?

It's different - but IMHO candles are much more romantic and add something to a reception.

You may not think so, but candy can run into being a lot of money. i would stick with the candles. You can find some great websites with great prices on candles.

I think the candle idea sounds better and might set a nicer mood - there are also some great discount candle websites out there. Maybe if you got some in varying sizes, kind of like in this Pottery Barn ad:
