We just got a $13000 quote for central air -- or we could go with 3 ductless units for $7000. Any opinions/experience with ductless units?
thanks.

Re: Central Air / Ductless Air
I never heard of ductless air but that price for central air seems very high. I got price quote one time for about $7500. Why was it so high?

Re: Central Air / Ductless Air
We have a big house - 6 bedrooms over 3000 square feet; we'd need 3 zones, and because we have 2 seperate attics the duct work would be extensive. This is our first quote though, we'll def. get another.

Sounds right to me because of your house size. My brother installs it, so I know what he charges.

My mother put in ductless units in her house in F-dale. It's a cape, so running ductwork would be a killer. It will be their second season with it and so far they are fine.

Kriss - are your parents happy with the ductless? Does it keep the house cool? Are they loud/noisy? Thanks for the info.

Re: Central Air / Ductless Air
I used to work at a Rep company that represented a company called SpacePak which is a much better alternative to your traditional duct C/A/C. It's high velocity therefore not allowing for dirt/allergens to settle in the VERY SMALL ductwork. It's so comaptible to all types of homes and EXTREMELY quiet that even hosptials and nursing homes have had our company design layouts using SpacePak.
If you'd like more info I can give you a # to call and they can get you contractors #'s in your area to give you a quote.

that quote actually doesnt sound too far off. My husband does AC for a living and wholesale it didnt cost us much less than that.
I think the ductless units are good for certain rooms - but I question if they are good enough for a whole house.

Re: Central Air / Ductless Air
13,000 doesn't sound bad at all. We are getting CAC in our new (very old) house and were quoted anything up to 12,000 for a 1,500 sq. ft. space! I never heard about the ductless option, so maybe I should make further enquiries before we decide.

Re: Central Air / Ductless Air
depends on the size of the unit...we looked at this for our townhouse since the duct work would have been a PITA ...but 13K sounds about right. My brother has his own company and it cost us about 11K (through HIM!) to put 2 zones in our 3000 sq ft house too!
