Does this ever happen? In other words, after initial prenatal visit, ultrasound, etc. - do you ever go back and they say you are further along or not as far as we thought? Does that measurement they take at the ultrasound tell them how old the baby is?

Re: changing due date?
Sometimes, it can happen. Especially if you weren't sure exactly when your last AF was. But, that stupid wheel thing they use is not perfect either, so sometimes they will re-calculate your date by measuring the baby.
Is everything okay? I hope so

Re: changing due date?
i had my inital sono at 7 weeks. i was given the due date of 6/14/02. Then when i had my sono at 20 weeks Emma measured further along than 6/14. I asked my obgyn about changing the due date and she told me that ALL babies are the same size right in the beginning so that is most accurate. By the time they reach 15 weeks or something like that they develope slightly differently.

Oh thanks Claud! Everything is fine though. I was just curious how it works. It amazes me that they pretty much all start out at the same rate. The whole thing is such a miraculous science! I was just looking at my sonogram picture and was wondering if the little x’s on the crown and rump were the measurement that determined the days old, weeks old, etc. I didn’t know how specific it could be. It’s interesting.

Re: changing due date?
I know that they look to see the baby's measurements on the sonogram and sometimes you that to determine a 'new' or 'updated' due date. But in all reality a due date is just an estimation of when the baby should arrive- sorta. I mean, many people who are 'late' aren't really late. They are just not working by that stupid wheel, and nature doesn't work by a wheel as we all know.

Re: changing due date?
We had a friend who was about 6 or 7 months along and the dr told her that he miscalculated the date and she really had another 3 or 4 weeks longer than they told her. She wasn't happy.

Re: changing due date?
but how far off can they be? is it like a two week either way thing because of when we ovulate? And did anybody read in the paper that they have determined that some women ovulate twice in a month? (my sister always claimed that...and she had 4 children right on top of each other)

Re: changing due date?
Hello, it happened to me!!!!! When I went to the dr at 9 weeks, the sonogram measured the baby at 10 weeks. I asked if that meant I was having gigunda baby (how ironic because now it looks like I might be with the diabetes), but the dr said no, it meant I didn't ovulate when I thought. Now you can set the clock to when I ovulate and I KNOW when I ovulate. I also know when we did the deed and all that jazz, so go figure.
If you calculate from my LMP, my original due date should be 9/16, but after the dr spun her little wheel, she told me it was 9/14. But after the first sonogram it moved up to 9/9 and has stayed that date, and the amnio and other sonograms confirmed it.
That's why I laugh when they say the baby is 'late'! It's probably right on time!!!

Re: changing due date?
Mine actually changed considerably. It turns out that I was pregnant for a month before I thought I was. I thought my body was like clock work... turns out that I got my period while I was pregnant... so I was fooled.
I went for my first pre-natal visit, at what I thought was 9w 1d, but after the sonogram I was 13w 5d... I'm going for a second sonogram in two weeks to confirm my ridiculous miscalculations!
I kind of liked the surprise change...

Jennifer - wow! At least the miscalc was in your favor! You got through the first tri w/o even knowing it!
Jenny - I don't know for certain, but I have a theory that my cousin was 'on time' w/her baby, even though by the doctor's due date, she was two weeks 'late.' They told her the baby was due on June 1st, but she didn't deliver until June 14th - had she had a c-section b/c she NEVER went into labor. They tried to induce her a week before her 'due date' and the pitocin didn't even work!
