Changing insurance questions....

My car has been registered and insured under my mother's name since I bought it 9 years ago. The insurance premium is almost up, and now I want to go under my husband's insurance.

My question is:
Do I have to change the registration FIRST (into my name), in order to put it under my husband's insurance, or can I do that after?

I'm so confused. I have to go to DMV to get a new license anyway, so I would rather get it done in one shot.

i think you need to change it over first to your name....you might even be able to call the ins company and ask them...

Marni you need to do insurance first and then the registration. You will have to have new insurance cards to bring to DMV that show the car insured in your name, then you can change the registration. Is the title in your name already? If not then you will have to have your mom sign the title over to you and get a new title from DMV also. Make sure that your Mom fills out a DMV form showing she gave the car to you as a gift or you will have to pay taxes.

Thanks for the info. Actually the title is in my name, so will I need my mom for anything to switch the registration over to me? Or can I just do it myself (once I go under my husband's insurance)?

I'm not sure to be honest. It might be on their website though. I think all you need to do is fill our a registration change form and turn in the plates that are on the car now. Anytime you change the registration from one person to another you have to get new plates too. Check the site though, cuz I don't want to give you incorrect info.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh nooooooooo - I have to give in the plates and memorize new ones - ugh! LOL

I think I'm going to just call them tomorrow and check for sure. If anything, they may just need a copy of her driver's license...

I went through the same thing last year ~ please learn from my mistake!

I put my car under Patrick's insurance BEFORE I changed the registration (the title was in my name, but it was registered and insured by my dad), and because life is busy, I put off going to DMV and taking care of the registration.

WELL, one day my dad got a letter in the mail suspending his license, because a car registered to him was uninsured (It wasn't, it was just insured by Patrick, not my dad). I then had to take a day off from work and straighten everything out. It was a complete nightmare.

The moral of my story: Regardless of what you do first, make sure it all gets done within as short a time period as possible!

Can I ask you something....

When you went to DMV to change the registration out of your dad's name (after you changed the insurance over to Patrick's name), did your dad have to sign anything? Did he have to go with you or did you have to bring a copy of his license or anything??

p.s. - i am the owner of the car (title is in my name)
