I haven't decided what I am going to do yet. The thought of just giving up my last name entirely makes me sad
This is exactly how I feel. I love my italian last name. FH has a boring common name, and I feel like if I change names I'll be losing part of my heritage. I just don't know what do to...

Re: Changing Last Name
I'm sorry that people make faces when you say you're taking FH's last name!!!
I'm not planning on taking FH's last name but everyone should respect one another's decision. Everyone has their reasons why they take FH's name, hyphenate, keep maiden name, etc. For some it's an easy decision, for others it's very difficult.

Re: Changing Last Name
it doesn't bother me to take his last name - it's just boring. I'm going from a cool Dutch last name to a cute little four letter one....BLAH. Everyone calls me by my last name because they like how it sounds!

Re: Changing Last Name
I think either is fine. It's a personal decision and each couple should do what they are comfortable with. I will be taking my FH's name.

I am taking my FH last name. But I cant help thinking how weird it is that I have had the same name for so many years and now I will be a different name? My family name is an honor to me and I just think it's going to be so hard not to be that anymore. But I can't wait to be Mr. & Mrs. either!!!
My thoughts exactly! I like his name, am excited to change, but it will just be weird to have been called my name for almost 30 years and then not be that anymore. But at the same time, it will be fun, and I love the traditionalism of it.

Re: Changing Last Name
I am puzzled also. I want to keep my last name (I am an only child) but I don't know about the hypenation of my husband's name. I do love it but, do I hypenate it or not? Any suggestions?

Re: Changing Last Name
Initially I was excited to lose my last name and get his. My name is italian and alwyas gets mispronounced, misspelled , my class doesn't want to say it because it's long so they call me Ms D. I was looking forward to an easier name. But now as the date gets closer, part of me feels I am losing my identity, my heritage and part of myself. I have always been Lisa D, I don't know myself by any other name. I don't know what to do.

Im keeping mine
Me too. I just feel that whether or not I take his name legally is unrelated to how much love FH each other or our sense of unity as family. He does not really care. I don't know-as I've gotten older the tradition does not makes sense to me personally. Also given the historical reasons why wives took their husbands names before it was defined as 'tradition' I'm not too cool with.
I guess I feel like it is a loss of identity that men don't have to deal with, but we as women do. So, now that it has become a matter of choice, I choose to keep my last name legally. But, I am more than happy to be referred to as 'Mrs.' if that's what people want to call me.

I agree with you, I dont want to give my name up either, FH wants me to take his, so the only thing i think would be to hyphenate it.

Re: Changing Last Name
i like both our names and they sound nice together, actually, so i've decided to hyphenate. i think it's a nice compromise. luckily, my last name isn't too long and neither is his.

Re: Changing Last Name
I got lucky..... I'm changing mine from Torres to Turek, very simple change ^_^. And yes, I'm excited to take it, I also feel very honored, and I always thought it was proper.
