Changing Last Name

Changing Last Name

I am really excited to be taking my FH last name without any hyphenation. But alot of people make faces at me like it is not cool anymore. Anyone else feel like this or is it just me?

i dont have a problem with the theory in general, i just dont like FHs last name, and i love mine! i make fun of his last name to him (he doesnt enjoy that, but whatever, if i have to give up my name, he can deal w/ listening to me about it)

Re: Changing Last Name

That is my problem to. I would LOVE to talk my FH's last name but I just don't like it. It is a long weird German last name. Not that mine is 100x better (its a short German last name)..but as a future teacher, my name would be easier.

So hence, married name for personal life, hyphanation for professional life.

Unless of course he wants to change his last name to mine...or we can make a combination!!!

I'll be taking his name. I'm young to not have had my career built around it yet. (Although it will take some time to get used to it.)

Plus, I have a brother, so it's not like my family name will not get passed on!

My fi's last name is shared by about 100 million Spanish people worldwide. Not looking forward to joining the ranks! My last name, is very rare and only my family has it...I misht 'cave' but I son't want to...they're too long to hyphenate...ugh!

I'm not excited to take his last name, but I will be changing to his - it's much easier to spell then mine is But I will also change my first name a bit too, just so it sounds better.

I'm very excited to take FH's last name-he has a common last name which is nice considering no one could ever pronounce my last name!!! And I like the way it sounds!

The only thing that MIGHT bother me is that FH's cousin is married to a 'Diana' which means we will both have the same name. I am thinking I might use my middle name too.

I am excited about taking my FI last name. Considering I don't meet with clients that much in my profession and my first name isn't very common, it shouldn't be a problem.

I am excited to take his name, its just so traditional. I just feel terrible that it looks like my last name has stopped in the generation and I hate that for my dad. I may take it as my middle name, but no, I get really excited like when we were filling it out for the honeymoon that I had to put my new name....very strange....

I couldn't wait to take DH last name. While I wish it was shorter like Smith or Jones, this is his name and now it is mine and in a few months our childs as well.
People are going to give you weird looks about anything and everything in general. Do what is going to make you happy and work for your relationship. Screw em all and what they think!

good point! But I try to be a little more positive everyone has their opinion. I just feel that tradition is the way to go.

Well I am keeping mine and adding his to mine with no hypenation. For two reasons, have done a lot professionally that I need to keep my last name to be recognized (in other parts of the country) and my last name is dead and I hate that. Also Since my first name is short and his last name is short it doesnt sound right. I am more excited just to be each other's family, name or no name!!!

I am taking my FH last name. But I cant help thinking how weird it is that I have had the same name for so many years and now I will be a different name? My family name is an honor to me and I just think it's going to be so hard not to be that anymore. But I can't wait to be Mr. & Mrs. either!!!

I haven't decided what I am going to do yet. The thought of just giving up my last name entirely makes me sad

Re: Changing Last Name

I never planned on changing, but then I had second thoughts.. so I am going to legally hyphenate, although our last names are both very long, I will never use the two names together.

I will be my maiden name at work, and wherever else.. and I will be Mrs. B socially and in whatever other company. This way also FH's last name is part of my legal last name for like dealing with kids and stuff, but I can still be Maiden Randi whenever I want!

I am excited to take his name because I will be his wife, but thats it. I love my last name, his just doesnt 'flow'. Oh well... whats that quote from Romeo and Juliet about whats in a name?

Re: Changing Last Name

I'm definitely not keeping just my last name but still contemplate over hyphenating it. Went out to dinner with inlaws and my parents last week and heard my dad say something refering to our last name and it just felt like someone hit me in the stomache...i can't stand the thought that in 8 months I wont have my last name anymore :(
