What is everyone doing about changing name? Anyone hyphenating?

Re: changing names

I am not changing my name. None of my friends have hyphenated. One friend kept her last name as her middle name, without the hyphen - but she had to go through all this legal stuff with the help of a lawyer to do it.

You hit a touchy subject in my house!! I want to keep my name, my finace wants me to take his. This is the only ting we have ever argued about. But with a compromise, I am hyphenating:

my name-his name.

I think he secretly hope that eventually I'll drop my name and just use his, but that's not going to happen!

Lawyer for changing names?

I don't have a middle name so am going to keep my current last name as the middle name and 'officially' take my fiancee's last name as my own.

Now I'm concerned, should I be getting in touch w/a lawyer soon to discuss paperwork around this?

I didn't think this would be so hard?

Thanks for sharing what you know...

Re: changing names

I am going to use my last name as my middle name (w/o hyphen.). It's a personal decision for everyone, but for me it's b/c I am of a different ethnicity as my fi, my name is one of the only things I can really hold on to, instead of people identifying me and assuming I am Irish-Scottish, once I take my fi's name.

Call me old fashioned if you like. I'm keeping my first and middle name, and taking his last name in place of mine. Its a bit bizarre to think about dropping the name I've gone by all my life, but I want the world to know that he and I are a family

Re: changing names

I am married for six months, I still haven't changed my name and still don't know what to do. I am leaning towards hyphenating my name. I have several reasons for keeping my name (loss of my father, career, etc.), but I also understand his feelings in this. I'll let you know when I finally make a decision.

Re: changing names

i kepy my last name as my middle name and his as last, no hyphen. There was no lawyer required for this? Its just whatever you put on the marriage certificate is what you need to stick with. Which I am also finding not entirely true. For example credit card companies I have been just telling them my new last name is his andnot bothering with the middle. They don't even seem to want proof I got married! Strange.

This is a very sensitive issue in my house right now! I have had my name my entire life. And now I am expected to just change it like that? I don't know what I am going to do.

You don't need a lawyer you can do this on your own and avoid paying for it. I changed my name a few years ago for personal reasons and it was really easy. I am not sure the procedures for a marriage but you would probably need the marriage license, a photo id and your social security number so they can update that. I went to the social security office in Mineola after I received the court papers and filled out the paperwork there. Within 3 weeks I had a new name! The social security card gets mailed to you and that is it really. I know to change your passport name its free and they just stamp it on the back instead of issuing a new one.

Re: changing names

When you get your license you are asked what you want to do about your name. that is where the name change stuff begins.
I am keeping mine. It is a personal decision and it is important to me.

Re: changing names

I got married in Oct and although I changed my name on my marriage license, with social security (which is the first place you should change it), with payroll at work and with my credit cards, I STILL HAVEN'T changed it on my license, registration and my car insurance!!!! So, I've now become 2 different people!! LOL :) At work, I'm still the old me and at home, I'm the old and new me!! It can be very confusing since sometimes I don't know what my name or address is listed as and who I'm supposed to be!!!! And, one word of advise, if you're changing your name with your medical insurance company, MAKE SURE THEY KNOW HOW TO SPELL!!! After 7 months (actually since December), my medical card FINALLY came with the correct name!! YIPPEE!!!! They kept sending me cards for me and my husband with HIS name spelled right and mine -- which is now his -- spelled wrong!!!

OH! If you have EZ Pass, you also have to change your name with them and you have to write a letter and send them a copy of your marriage license!!!

My last name is 13 letters long, so I am happily taking his 5 letter last name with a big smile on my face!

I am having the same dilemma. If you find any info out, let me know. From what I understand, you could change your name at any time, but I dont know for sure.

Re: changing names

I'm at the same place as you Bearsbabe, and I've been married 10 months! I morph between using my 'old' name on some credit cards and bank stuff, (which for me was first, middle, last because I have a cousin with the same first and last name as me and we use middle names to keep our stuff straight), my 'new' name at work and on my drivers license (first, middle, his last, because HE has a first cousin who I now share a first and last name with!), and a combo first, middle initial, my last, his last with no hyphen on our mortgage and car payments because we bought the house and car before we were married and it was just easier to stick his last name on the end of mine.
Sometimes I get so confused I can't remember who the heck I am!
