Changing utilites

Hi
So it seems that we have to change the names on all the utilities before we go to closing, but how do we know what date we will be in when they give you an 'on or about date'. Anyone know how to go about this? I thought this is what I paid my lawyer for and never knew we were the ones that have to do all this.

Yes you need to find out from your attorney the day you will take possesion. It is different then the on or about date. You will start all the utilities on that day. We changed all of ours as well the attorney does not do that. We had to set up LIPA, water, oil, etc.

Ugh! I didn't know we would have to do that before closing! I don't even know who does all that stuff up there. We're moving off LI.

Call the real estate agent who you are buying from. She will have all the utility information. It was simple. Made a few phone calls and was done in under an hour.
