changing your name

i have 6 months - but i was wondering - where do you even start to get your name changed??

i have no idea what i will need to do or how to do it - help!

Once you get you 'original' marriage licence, you will need to go to SS. SS is the place that will change your name.

Then DMV, credit cards, HR at work (401K), benefits, bills, etc...

can you do this all on-line or through the mail?/ or do you physically have to go down to the SS office?

You have to show the original document so you do have to do to the office.

You can download the form online and see what other IDs/papers/form you need to bring. That way you can save time and be ready when you go there.

You can do SS through the mail, but you'd have to mail your original marriage certificate with the form. I didn't want to mail it in and wait several weeks to get it back so I went in person. You can go to any SS office unless you're a Brooklyn resident in which case you have to go to the Brooklyn SS office.
