who is hyphenating--who is completely changing--who is making their maiden name their middle name--
--and if you are keeping your name what does fi think/feel about it?
if he is not to fond of you keeping your name, what are you doing to 'convince' him that u want to keep it
i want to hyphenate--he isn't too thrilled about that and a few of my friends are having a tough time about this too w/their fi........any advice/opinions/etc.?

Re: changing your name
I'm kind of weird. I changed my driver's license to take his last name, but I changed nothing else. My passport, SS, etc. are still in my maiden name. At work, I hyphenate. So, it's very confusing, and I have to figure out what I want to do, now that I'm PREGNANT!!!!! I will probably take his name officially so we, as one family, can have the same last name as a unit. But, it's killing me.

Re: changing your name
thats another reason I'd take his name. I don't want our kids to be confused, having parents with different names.

Re: changing your name
I'm taking FH last name but I am making my middle name my maiden name. My dad has 3 girls so I felt I wanted to carry it on in some way!

Re: changing your name
After a lot of internal debate, I've decided to take FH last name...
When I had originally told him that I was keeping my last name he was really sad... so i thought long and hard about it... What's a name anyway...???

Re: changing your name
If you want to hyphenate your name you definetly should. It's something your fiance has to understand. If he doesn't like the idea, ask him WHY he wants you to take his last name. Other than it being traditional, is there really a reason NOT to hyphenate. You need to change his basic presumption that a woman should take her husbands name. Maybe you could try to explain that women used to take their husband's name because a women used to be considered her husband's property. Today, it doesn't have that same legal reasoning behind it (thank god!!!). If he can't come up with any reasons to NOT hypenate than I don't think he has a leg to stand on. If his concern is about the kids then decide whether the kids will have just his name, or the hypenated name (or if you want to be confrontational tell him you think the kids should have your maiden name - ha, that'll go over well!!! But seriously, you should do what you want. All that said and done, I'm taking my FH's name...

I'm taking FH's last name. And I will for once and for all be done with my deadbeat real Dad's family and their silly last name.

Re: changing your name
I'm still on the fence over whether to make my maiden name my middle ( i don't hvae a middle name) or hyphenating. I'm an attorney, too, so either way, I'm going to have to change it w/ the Bar, you can't practice under a different name than what you're admitted under. It's a pain. I'm leaning towards maiden as middle since FH's name is long and Italian, might be too much w/ name.

Re: changing your name
I don't have a middle name, so my FH wanted me to make my soon-to-be maiden name my middle name, but my current last name is not middle name material - way too long. So, I am just changing, short and sweet.

Re: changing your name
I am keeping my last name, but making it sort of a 2nd middle name. So it will look like this...
First name, middle name, maiden name, FH last name.
Basically it will just be there to make me feel better and that I'm not completely losing my identity. I'll still be known as Mrs. new last name.

Re: changing your name
I am absolutely not changing my name. My FH doesn't really care one way or the other. He knows I am very independent and he gets a kick out of it. His mom was remarried and had a different last name than he did growing up and he was never confused nor were his teachers or friends. My sister is a kindergarten teacher and half her kids have different last names than their parents- that is almost the norm now. I don't know, I just feel a little defensive about it, I guess. I am not really sure why. In my career field, most women keep their own last names so in that sense I won't be alone.

Re: changing your name
I'm ditching my God forsaken last name like a bad habbit! My Father was basically only a sp*rm doner- no need to carry on this last name!

Definately going to change. Nobody can pronounce my last name so it will be a change to go to an easier one.

Re: changing your name
FH says he would be willing to take my last name as well. So we might be
Mr. & Mrs. First Name, Middle Name, Maiden Name, FH's Last name.
The reason being if my brother (only and older) ever gets married, he is not going to want kids. This way, my parents' name gets carried on with our kids.
How sweet is that???

Re: changing your name
I took his name at his insistance - I kept my own last name at work, and this is a very sore point - whenever he hears me on the phone using my maiden name he gets very quite. I like my new name, but it is a difficult thing to do, I had a hard time with it.
