Re: changing your name
i haven't mentioned that to him yet--i was too stuck on hyphenating---one of my co-workers did the middle name thing--she could not part w/her last name (we all call her by it/it's her nickname for years!)...that will be my last resort!

Re: changing your name
I'm taking his name...I always knew I would take my husband's name but thats because I don't like my last name...I have issues...
FH would FLIP if I didn't want to take his name!
Personally, I can understand not taking FH's name for professional reasons, especially if you've built up a reputation in your field or hyphenating, but I've never considered it.

Re: changing your name
I'm taking his name - I can't wait! However, I feel sad about dropping my last name because it is my family name. My initials will stay the same, though.

Re: changing your name
I just did this today I made my maiden name my middle name. I had no problem at social security BUT the beatch that works at DMV was practically yelling at me that I couldn't do that When I told her they let me at SS she was yelling well this is the DMV!!!! All because I use my middle initial, sheesh

Re: changing your name
Hyphenating is too long so I am completely changing it!
I use to think I wanted to hyphenate my name to keep my maiden name because my daughter has my maiden name but now that she is 20 years old it doesn't really matter. My name is 4 syllables & his is only 2
FH doesn't care if I chose to keep my name but says he'd be honored to have me take his name.

Re: changing your name
I am completely changing it. Both of our last name are 4 letters starting with a D, so it is not a huge change I get to keep my initials

Re: changing your name
I will be taking his last name. I always planned to so we have never had a discussion about not taking his name. But I think that FH might not exactly be thrilled if I decided to keep my name. He's pretty traditional about those types of things.
Now you've got me thinking and maybe I should keep my name professionally. I have to think about this one. Anyone know how to go about doing this? Do you think your professional licenses/certifications can be under a different name than your legal name?

Re: changing your name
i'm keeping my last name, it's short and easy to spell. i don't really care if people call me or adress things to me as mrs. his last name. i just don't want to go through the hassle of changing my license, ss card etc. i mean my name is my identity why should i change it? he's not upset about it at all. the children will have his last name which is all he cares about, not sure how my future in-laws feel, but i don't really care. i plan on giving my kids my name as their middle name :)

Re: changing your name
I am changing. My dad is having a hard time with it too. I am changing from a nice Italian name to a Polish name. He asked me the other day if FH could change his name to ours (hee-hee)

Re: changing your name
I hyphenated my name for paper work and official documents only. I am going by my maiden name at work and by his name socially. Even though I consider myself more on the traditional side, I wasn't ready to fully give up my name. He is upset but understands. I told him that I would rethink this through next year but for now I am happy and comfortable with my decision.

I'm changing it. i don't like my last name... but i'm having a hard time with it. It's sad to lose my family name, especially since im an only child. But I wouldn't get rid of my middle name, since thats what my dad calls me. So i'll just have to get used to it.

I am doing the same as Scoop. Unfortunately, FH is not thrilled about this at all, but I think he realizes that it's my choice.

Re: changing your name
I will take his name but it is bittersweet though...
I spent my whole life wanting to get rid of my last name, wanting to get married- doodling my first name with my current flame of the moment's last name on a napkin or something- but now, I feel like that name is part of me- It's who I am- and parting with it will be really tough.
