Changing your name with social security

so i couldn't find a straight answer on the website wheather you can go in person or mail in the form to change your name so i called them. they told me they need your original marriage certificate.. i am little weary of giving them my original. anybody else hear of this or anybody know of any other options???

I went in person and they give you the marriage certificate back right after you fill out the form. I didn't realize you can send it out by mail. I got my SS card about one week after I applied for the new one.
