Try farecompare.com , you tell them where you want to go and they will email you when cheaper tickets come out. They also have some good information on when and how to get discount tickets.

Tuesday is the best day to buy flights. Don't trust 'discount' sites like expedia, ALWAYS shop around.

This is from an article about how to get the best deal. I really have no clue, but my FH is a NUT about traveling deals and has always told me, but here's a real reason

' Though prices fluctuate frequently and the ups and downs of airline prices can frustrate and anger consumers, airline pricing actually does follow a cycle during the week. Many sales, in which some seats are discounted by 15% to 25% typically, are launched Monday night....

...When airlines want to push through a fare increase, marking up their basic prices across the board usually by $5 or $10, they often do that on Thursday night, then watch to see if competitors match and if the higher rates stick over the weekend. If competitors balk, prices can be rolled back by Monday morning.

In addition, airlines don't manage their inventory as actively on weekends, so if cheap seats sell on some flights, prices automatically jump higher. Fare analysts may decide later to offer more seats at cheaper prices, but not until they come back to work on Monday, according to airline pricing executives.'

I usually use expedia to find the cheapest flights for where I have to go but I always book through the actual airline website. I don't trust booking through sites like Expedia or anything else - I've had issues in the past with them. They are great for showing all airlines fees together for comparison. One thing to keep in mind though with Expedia is that American Airlines no longer shows their flights on Expedia so you'll have to check them separately to see if they are cheaper.

i search through Orbitz.com and most of the time book with them. If prices gets lower, they automatically refund you the amount - I've received a couple of refunds from them already!

they only refund it if the price goes down AND somebody else purchases the same itinerary.

i bought a one way flight to canada last year (was taking a non-round-trip cruise), the flight price dropped by a few hundred dollars, but since nobody else purchased that same one-way flight, i didn't get the discount.

I agree, use orbitz or expedia for research purposes only and then go to actual airline site to book your flights. I learned the hard way! AND book the earlier the better.

kayak.com tells you when prices have changed (up or down)
