We have a bunch of checks (and expect to get more at the wedding) in our married name 'John and Jane Doe'.
FH couldn't deposit them without me on his account, but we wont get a chance to put my married name on his account until after the honeymoon, so how are we supposed to deposit our wedding check??
so stumped!!!

Re: checks in married name
Unfortunately, we had to wait until we could show the bank a copy of our marriage certificate to deposit any checks that were made out like that. We received the certificate about 2 weeks after our wedding.

Re: checks in married name
I've made checks out that way because I didn't know how else to write them. They're not just going to one member of the couple, so both names go on it. Sorry if it annoyed you (or them).
Checks should be good for 90 days from the date they're written so you should be fine to wait.

Re: checks in married name
WE had almost all the checks made out like that but DH a& I opened a joint acct when we started wedding planning.
Also if you open a jt account think about TD because they are open on sundays.....we went the day after our wedding so we could go on our HM without tons of $$$ sitting in our apt.

Re: checks in married name
we opened a joint account the day after the wedding, I used my maiden name, and we were able to deposit all of the checks right then and there.

Hmm we have a joint account now but I'm sure the bank would make us wait as well, thank stinks! But I'd probably write a check the same way!

If you have a joint acct the bank will let you deposit the checks.

Re: checks in married name
Just take the checks to your bank and ask. Both DH and I have to endorse the checks in his name, my former name (which is on the account) and my new name (which actually wasn't even my new name yet, people just assumed). Most bank officers can tell you, you will not be the first people to come in which checks made out to married couples!

It really will depend on your bank. We had a joint account also, and we were able to deposit all checks made out to just me, or just to DH, or to 'Jane Doe and John Smith', but they absolutely would not accept the checks written to 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith' or 'Jane and John Smith' without our marriage certificate. I know friends of ours have had zero problems depositing any checks, but we had a hard time.

This should work - have him put you on his account asap...

Re: checks in married name
This is why I write wedding checks to just one of the people getting married

Re: checks in married name
You can just open up a joint account, with your maiden name and FH's name on it and then deposit them there. DH and I had a joint account for awhile and we just went to the bank and they let us deposit them in there without any problem at all.

Re: checks in married name
I usually just write out wedding checks to Cash to make things easier for the couple

Re: checks in married name
After my wedding, I started writing out gift checks to Cash for future weddings I've gone to! It's just so much easier for the couple. If you don't have a joint account, you're basically screwed if people put both of your names on the check (which most do).

Well... first it depends on your bank and how well they know you. What bank do you bank with? I work for a bank. It's easier if they do 'or' instead of 'and'. If you have any with 'or' then you should be able to deposit those right now... no questions asked. As for the 'and' checks... they will most likely have you sign in your maiden name and your married name, along with FH endorsing them. Is the problem that your name isn't on his account (not a joint account) or that your name isn't the same? Because that's a different scenario. If your name isn't on his account... why not just do that now? Or open a joint account? Some banks you can add the signer online. Banks are used to dealing with this scenario... it happens all the time. Is there any way that you can just go into the branch and be added on the account? Even if you don't go together, he should be able to go in to notify them that you are coming in later to be added on the account. That's been done before. They should be able to work with you on this. I've never really heard of it being that big of a problem.

If you have a joint account... it should be fine.. They most likely will make you sign your name both ways. This is VERY common in banks... so they usually know what to do and can work with you. Remember the bank wants that money to go into your account!!!
