Because the Supreme Court makes the decisions on the legal matters that affect Americans citizens daily lives the most. For example, Brown v. Board of Education (separate facilities based on race are inherently unequal), Roe v. Wade (pro-choice). There are many others.
This is a unit of the American History New York State curriculum.
Most of the country failed to realize this during the last election. There will be most likely 3-4 nominations to the Supreme Court during the remaining years of Bush's administration (we now have two, O'Connor... first female justice appointed by Carter and now Renquist). This means that all of the appointees will be conservative as Bush, and his party, is taking a very conservative stance. This will swing the court to nearly all conservative justices. Since justices are appointed for life and can serve for 30-40 years so the Supreme Court has far greater an impact than any one President or session of Congress. It is almost a done deal that Roe v. Wade will be overturned and possible many laws protecting against gender and racial discrimination.
As it is, the court, in its most recent session, passed a law basically outlawing the right to private property. If a business wants to expand and take over your property, your property can easily be condemned (no matter what the condition) and the business can be allowed to expand. THIS IS FRIGHTENING!!! It's is favoring big business and last time I checked the consitution our democracy was supposed to be about the rights of individuals
If you feel differently you MUST contact your state's reps. in the House and Senate as Congress is the one who holds the confirmation hearings. The hearings are starting for John Roberts (the replacement for O'Connor) this week. Amongst other things he is against Roe v. Wade even when the life of the woman is in danger.
So take five minutes out of your day, read up on the issues and make a call.

i am very well aware of the above and will watch closely the appointments. Rehnquist was not one who was in line with my views, will his replacement be even more damaging? i read the initial response as someone who believed Rehnquist was a protector of these civil liberties, hence the question...

You're right - his replacement is simply replacing an already solid conservative position on the Supreme Court. It won't change the voting balance. O'Connor's replacement is the one to worry about because she proved an important swing vote and I'm not so sure about this Roberts guy - don't know enough about him yet - he could turn out to be another Souter for all we know.
