CHewing, Chewing, Chewing!!!!!

AGHHH!!!!
Neo is killing me!!! He chewed a favorite CD, my checkbook, the vertical blinds, my Franco Heels, a wicker basket, the chair I'm sitting on, a photobox..(just the box not the pics), placemats...pillows!!!

The bitter apple is not working...
Any suggestions???

Do you have chew toys for him? Have you given him a kong with peanut butter inside? or a hollow bone with some cheese or PB in it? You just have to consistently replace him chewing your stuff with things he is allowed to chew on. Immediately take the CD out of his mouth and put in a chew toy.

are you yelling at him while he is doing it or after the fact? Dogs don't understand being yelled at unless you yell at him while catching him in the act.

He has plenty of toys...I am very consistent about replacing the chew toy for the object he shouldn't have.
The kong he plays with but not as much as his stuffed toys....

As for yelling..I only say NO in a firm voice when he gets caught with a no object. then i replace it with a toy..but sometimes I just don't catch him in time...

Tabasco sauce has worked wonders for us too - When Golem was going through the most agressive stage of his teething, he was CONSTANTLY mouthing us!!!! Nothing was working that we were successfull with in the past - The NO BITE correction, the bitter apple, the submission, nothing was getting through!
Then we tried the Tabasco sauce.... one lick of that and Golem bugged out!!! Took off running around the table, and wehn he tried biting again, we put it on our hands, and yelled NO BITE - and after three or four times - he finally got the picture. Now when he decides to 'test' us - we get the bottle or even just say 'Tobasco' in a warning tone - he stops REAL fast. Very effective!!!

Have you tried the flavored edible nylabones? Bama will chew on those things for HOURS.
They also have those teething toys for puppies where you fill them with water and freeze them.

Yes I caret him every night and while I'm at work...I come home during lunch and let him out and he runs around for about a half hour..

He is really fast. I could be putting my makeup on in the bathroom and hear something weird come out and he has something..

His new favorite this week is the remote.

oh, know what else you can also start doing? It's called tethering - where the pup is with you at all times when out of the crate. You have him on leash, attached to your pants or whatever, and the basic idea is that if he is alwasy with you, you can correct the bad behavior immediatly as it happens. After a while, they get the picture and it really helps them learn. It sounds like he's out of the crate and not alwasy under your watchful eye - maybe the tethering is worth a try? We did this with Golem too and he caught on pretty quickly what was okay to chew on (toys) and what wasn't (couch, table, etc.) Just remember, this is all a phase! That's been my mantra ever since we brough our puppy home - knowing it will eventually pass with time makes it a little more bearable too

Thnak you helena!!
I know I have to think of it as passing soon. He is a large breed dog and very active. We tried the teetering..but it was more of an inconvience for me...
I found that basically he's chewing in the am as I'm getting ready for work. He's full of energy and I'm not paying as much attention to him b/c I obviously have to get dressed etc...
Other times we spend time playing...the mornings are alot harder...esp. since I am not an AM person!!!

Overall he's soo good. I just get frustarted and loose my patience especailly when I feel like I might be late for work...

I found I had to let go of 'crate guilt'. When you can't supervise he must be in the crate. Put a peanut butter, dog food, gravy, and biscut layered kong in there with him. I got a pamphlet on how to Stuff a kong! They might have a website... Not sure though.
