child at reception

child at reception

So here is my dilemma. I have one RB (FH nephew) who will be just turning 2 at my ceremony. FH and I discussed we think he should be picked up by family member/sitter either after ceremony or after cocktail hour because he is so young and dont think it is a place for a child esp after such a long day. FH mentioned it to mom and he thinks there will be ill feelings and said they never even thought it was an issue. Am I wrong?????
Now Im afraid they think it is a question that it is up to them when FH and I would like our wishes to be taken into consideration. What should I do....dont want my in-laws to hate me!

Re: child at reception

We have 6 children under the age of five at our reception and I am not happy about it. These are my cousins' children. I am very close to my cousins (we all grew up together like brothers and sisters) so their kids are like my own niece and nephew. One cousin has a 3 yr old son and a 4 yr old son. These kids get their own seat at the reception, so that means I am using 4 seats for this one family. It's really a waste of space in my opinion but a 3 and 4 year old are too big for high chairs and parents' laps for a 3-4 hour reception. What will happen is that the kids will get tired and cranky by 9, and the parents will have to leave. So I am out 4 good seats just for one hour's worth of attendance!!

I don't think there is much you can do really. If there will be ill will towards you guys for suggesting a family member's child shouldn't attend your reception, then it's best not to say anything. It's not worth it in the long run.

Re: child at reception

I am usually in the minority when this topic comes up but we had a dozen children at our wedding/reception, with all but 2 under the age of 5, with a 3 mo old being the youngest. We had activity bags for them, that included coloring books, crayons, stencils, funny crab hats, and glow necklaces.

The children were engaged and didn't fuss. They danced all night long with us and were a total hit at the party. We couldn't have imagined it any other way.

IMHO, children are not a drag on wedding receptions. They end up adding something very special to the party.

I think you should just have a plan for your RB. Talk with his mother before hand and gauge what she thinks his temperament will be. Ask if having a coloring book there for him or something would keep him entertained so that they too can enjoy the party. That will help you a lot more than uninviting him.

Re: child at reception

we will have about a dozen kids under 10 at our daytime wedding reception.... we are fine with it and don't even feel like we need to do anything extra as the kids will entertain each other.

I think its a lot harder with just 1, the poor kid will be so bored and feel so out of place, even at 2 they know.

I think what will likely happen is that the mom and dad will probably leave your reception early and take the little guy home.

Or he could just end up falling asleep in the corner too, it can't be that bad.

i will have 5 kids under age 5 at my wedding (1FG 2 RB's and FH's 2 kids) we are probably having them picked up an hour into the reception because 1 -our wedding ends at 1am and thats way too late for young kids and 2- the parents want to have a good time, it was actually partly their decision

We're having children at the reception. There was barely ever a thought not to. But then again, our reception is during the day so maybe nighttime wedding would be better of without children. I think we'd have the children come either way.

We are having children at ours, starting by our
3 1/2 yr old son who will be the RB, our 7 yr old niece from out of town who will be my FG shes like our own daughter she been spending all her summers with us since she was 2 yrs old, and my MOH's 6 yr old son I just want him there, the rest of the kids maybe 6more are all from out of town, they are nieces and nephews who cannot be left behind because there will be no one available to watch them, i dont mind them being there because they all are family and my son's cousins.
Our rule is Family Kids only.

We had a lot of children at our reception and they were no issues. I just made up goody bags with things for them to do and they were fine. They were also our entertainment on the dance floor so that was hysterical to watch. For close family members or people I knew who could not get sitters I could not leave the children out. It would have been disrespectful in my eyes as for I have a big family with lots of little ones.
