So I will apologize now as I am a bit frustrated and my invites have a ways to go before they take flight! Is anyone else having an adult only reception? We are allowing only those children in the bridal party to attend our reception. All other invites will go to adults only - 18/21 and over (we havent figured out that part).
Well it seems as though the issues have already begun and cousins feel as though they should be able to bring their young children or cousins with a great number of children should be able to bring them all even if they arent over the age cut off.
How is everyone dealing with this? It has me quite upset right now! GRRRR

Re: Children at the reception ...
We are only having the children in our bridal party as well as our neices and nephews, regaurdless of age. We used 'adult reception' on our invites. I am sure we will run into some issues as well. I am hoping that my mother & father will handle calling any one in my famiy who thinks they should bring thier 3-4-5 year olds. I want to keep the peace, but i think with any wedding, some ones feelings end up getting hurt.

Can I make a suggestion? Count all the potential kids you'd have to invite. If it's a high number - say, over 30 or 40 - explain to cousins that if you invited one kid, you'd have to invite 40 of them, and you can't possibly do that. People will be understanding if you put it in terms of sheer numbers.

Hi Shallots ... Makes sense. I just dont feel as though I should have to explain. However, at the end of the day I am sure I will! BLAH!

Re: Children at the reception ...
I'm annoyed enough at the sheer # of children that are ending up at my shower! My invites clearly say that it will be an adult only reception and only my bridal party children will be included that day-whoever doesn't like it-too bad.

We are having an adult reception. We just simply addressed our invites to the Mr & Mrs. not 'The Smith Family'. So far we have not had any problems...

Re: Children at the reception ...
Children should not be at a reception anyway! I am having the same problem since FH wants 'all his family' there. On the invite I think adult only reception is fine. Maybe out of town guests will have a slight problem but I'm sure if they work it out with you personally it would be fine. I attended a wedding in FL 2 years ago and the bride set up a place for the kids to hang out, with supervision of course, while the parents were at the reception. It was a great idea and the children had so much fun!

Re: Children at the reception ...
Our wedding is 18 and over. there are just too many kids to pay for them all. My way of dealing with it is as simple as this is what we are doing. I'm sorry if you dont like it. I can't worry about not upsetting people because at the end of the day I'm going to anyway. I might as well do whats best for me. Kids are invited to the engagement party and shower and what not.
Besides, my sister and brother both said even if their kids were invited they wouldn't be there. They want to be able to drink and have fun. Its adults acting like adults. I am having an evening wedding, half of them are going to fall asleep anyway.

Re: Children at the reception ...
We are actually looking forward to having kids at our wedding. As for cost, any children under 5 are free through my caterer and 5-9 50% of the cost, so I see it as more little people that I love who can come to my wedding for free! If cost is a concern, you should speak to your caterer. This is usually commonplace.
I know I am the exception, but I am nervous that people will not want to bring their kids.
To be fair, we also chose a venue that is very kid-friendly and did so intentionally. We are going to have kid's tables and other activities to keep them (and the parents) happy through-out the night.

We are having an adult only reception - even FG is going home.

Re: Children at the reception ...
It is your decision..If you decided no kids, then no...If you addressed the envies to the Mr & Mrs and they add, I would call and explain you can't accomodate jr. (I would use limited space or something....) I know you don't have to explain, but they will put you on the spot.
I do see some people saying that children have no place at a reception. That is a personal opinion, as I am having 12 kids from 2-10 yrs of age..They are my neices and nephews and they mean alot to me... The thought of them not celebrating me me makes me sad.
I have been to weddings where adults acted worse than the kids due to drinking, flirting and other poor choices.
Do what makes you happy...It is your day and only you know how you want to celebrate.

Same here. I'm having about 15 kids under the age of 13 at my reception. They are distant cousins but I can't imagine my wedding without them. The youngest is... 4 and he's my RB. The majority of them are aroung 10. I know their parents always bring things with them to entertain them and they are 99% of the time well behaved. I have 0 concern.
If you choose to have an adult only reception everyone else needs to respect that.

Re: Children at the reception ...
Our wedding is adults only as well and although I did not make the invitations yet, I plan on adding it to avoid confusion. The only kids at my wedding are my son (ring boy) and flower girl. My fiance's sisters have 5 kids altogether and I don't want to have everyone brings kids and make it into a Rompa Room Party (sorry if I sound mean). My fiance actually wants to invite his 2 eldest nieces (9 and 13) and I am on the fence but will okay that, but nobody else.

Re: Children at the reception ...
I agree partially ... I couldnt imagine my wedding without our nieces/nephews but other children are not appropriate. Im surprised that people would think to bring them. I may hire a sitter to tend to the children for I know they wont last till the wee hours of the night. I want everyone to enjoy themselves!
