Children at the reception ...

Original post by CantWaitMrsH

So I will apologize now as I am a bit frustrated and my invites have a ways to go before they take flight! Is anyone else having an adult only reception? We are allowing only those children in the bridal party to attend our reception. All other invites will go to adults only - 18/21 and over (we havent figured out that part).

Well it seems as though the issues have already begun and cousins feel as though they should be able to bring their young children or cousins with a great number of children should be able to bring them all even if they arent over the age cut off.

How is everyone dealing with this? It has me quite upset right now! GRRRR

I hired a sitter to watch my son and the flower girl and got them a crib for the bridal room so they can sleep.

I wanted a adult only reception (except for my neice and nephew) but FH wanted to invite his BM's 2 kids and one of my coworkers is bringing her 13 y/o daughter (which I dont mind because she is the sweetest girl)

all the kids in our bridal party will be at the reception and will be staying throughout the night.
we also are inviting several family members who have kids in the 7-13 age group and their children will also be invited. whether or not they bring them is another matter altogether.
however, idon't feel that having kids there will ruin the atmosphere or the party or allow other people to enjoy themselves, but that jmo.

I do agree that unless the invite specifically states the names of the children, or says 'family,' I think its rude to assume the children are invited. Most weddings are largely adult events unless otherwise specified. All of our invitations will say the children's names.

I think it also depends on the day and timing of your event. Dont get me wrong, I love children but that isnt the type of affair I am trying to have. Everyone is different though!

Whatever you do, you just can't please them all... We also had an adult reception only and it all worked out. The out-of-towners had to leave their children in the hotel and hired nanny themselves on the day of the wedding.

GOod luck

This happened to me....stick to your guns. Just apologize for the inconvience that this may cause them but that you and your FH have decided that you want an adult only reception so everyone can just kick back and enjoy themselves amongst adults. People will get mad and some may not come but oh well..... it boggles my mind that people feel they have a say in what you should do for your wedding. Sorry your going through this!

Oh it really is so nice to see that others are having this dilemma as well! Well not really a dilemma because I know that I do not want children at the reception. ABSOLUTELY LOVE them, but I have a ton of second cousins that are little, and if I invited some, they would ALL have to come. Just not the type of wedding reception I want. I understand that it may annoy some people, but I will make sure to give more than enough notice with save the dates and invites- to allow time to make babysitting arrangments. It's not that I think they will behave badly- I just feel that it would change the feel of the evening.

My only concern is that my flower girl and ring bearer are six. Would it be normal to just invite them? Then I worry about their little sister who will be left out. My cousin is very cool, so I'm sure she will be fine with whatever I decide, but it is just very stressful to think about!

GOOD LUCK!!!

Were only having the kids in the bridal party attend the reception and Kids over 18 are invited because there not really kids, We don't feel like we have to justify our reasons to any family members this is our decision and were paying for the wedding, The STD's went out addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Smith..... and the invitations will go out the same and if anyone questions were going to tell them there are no kids invited to the wedding and they should respect your answer with no questions asked because after all it is you and your fiance's wedding day. You just have to be strong willed with your answers and not give in.
