China

China

I have a few questions about China...

Is it appropriate to register for China?
If you don't register for it, is there a traditiona about who buys it? (My cousin was married recently and her mother insister that the bride's mother buys the China, but their wedding was also very, very over the top so I don't know if that's an actual tradition).
How much is an average price for a 5 piece place setting, and what is expensive?

actually china on a registry is the norm...Alot of times the brides parents do buy it, but ive also seen many times the BP chip in and buy the china, but ive also seen the grooms parents buy it, usually it will be someone very close to you.

WOW its hard to give a price range, it can vary greatly...go to sites to check out prices, such as bed bath and beyond, fortunoff, macy's, you can even go to lenox

Bed Bath and Beyond has china that ranges from low ($39 a setting) to (150+)

The $39 is actually a really nice Mikasa platinum setting.

Registering for china is the norm. There are no rules or traditions about who purchases it, unless your family has one. (Mine doesn't)

China is usually around $90 - $100 a place setting. I think anything over $150-175 is 'expensive' but not outrageous.

Ours is about $130 a place setting, but it's always on sale for like $89. Between engagement presents and my shower, we've gotten all but 1 place setting -- probably because it's always on sale.

I wasn't going to register for China - as I felt it was to fancy for the lifestyle my FH and I lead. My MOH changed my mind with this explanation:

'By the time you are older and have kids, you'll want to have lovely Thanksgiving & Christmas dinners with your family. By the time that comes, you'll be bogged down with bills of owning a house, kids and the doctor and you won't have the money then to get yourself a nice set of China. Allow the people who love you to provide that for you NOW and put it away if you don't want to use it.'

I thought it was very good advice...

I've never heard about a tradition as to who buys the Bride her china...my Mom bought mine but I dont think that it's an unwritten law anywhere that she HAS to.
Not every couple registers for good china. I come from a family of people who always use the good china on holidays & special occasions, FI family doesnt do that at all!
I think it's a matter of taste, if you think you'll use it...go ahead and put it on the registry.
You can choose from tons of patterns and brands that will vary in price. I went middle of the road in terms of price because if a piece breaks I want to be able to replace it without going broke!! LOL
Plus my FMIL works for Fortunoff so I'll get a descent discount :)

I think everyone deserves to have nice dishes to eat off on on the special days! But hey thats just me..do what makes you happy.

We registered for china, but I took off my place settings because my mother wanted to purchase all of them - and she has! I guess it's whatever you prefer to do.

My mom bought mine and will buy my sisters for her wedding. Its not really a tradition, but in our family it is. My Grandma bought China for my mom and my Aunt for them.

I agree with this!

I would register my China. Actually sometimes I should have added some other pieces that I would have liked to have.
