I feel dumb asking this, but you gals have confused me... I'm a 1st-time-mom (9wks along)... can someone go into more depth regarding the difference between U/S?
Internal/Externals? And UltraScreens? Level IIs? OH MY!
Let me see if i can help you ...i was once clueless to and learned as I went along and with the help of fellow mommie KP.
So what i learned:
U/S= Ultrasound whether its internal or external its still an ultrasound.
Internal u/s- they use a wand with a condom on it and well its internal and goes you know where. They do internals when your early on b/c the baby is so tiny thats the only way to see a clear picture and to confirm the pregnancy (along with a blood test-to confirm)
External u/s- is the one they put the jelly on your tummy and use the transducer that emits the picture from the sonogram machine to see the baby.
Ultrascreen- is a test taken I believe in your 12th week. It tests for down syndrome it is usually done in the hospital as they have better machines. It consits of a blood test from your finger and an sonogram that measures the skin fold on the back of the neck. (i think its an optional exam)
Level II Sonogram- Again taken in the hospital and is an EXTENSIVE external u/s. It takes a while and is soooooooo Exciting! They look at how everything from the baby's brain to his toes is developing! You also may get to see the sex of the baby then if you want to know and if the baby cooperates!
eta: Level II is at 20 weeks
i hope i helped! I am only up to week 24 so dont ask me anything past that

Wow, thank God I logged on right now. This information is TOTALLY helpful!
Yesterday I went for an external u/s, and was amazed at how it basically does the same thing as the internal... minus the condom... lol. This is definitely an exciting time in my life, and I'm enjoying it to the fullest.
Thanks so much for the information Babyonboard! Please DO send more as you go along - greatly appreciate it.

Only thing I want to add is the ultrascreen is taken anywhere between 10-13 weeks.

Yes I did! Check it out!
I'm @ 9 weeks 2 days now, and the U/S measured the baby @ 8 weeks, 5 days. If you look at the 1st pic sideways, it looks like tweetie... hahahahaha. 'I taw I taw a wittle baby! I DID, I DID taw a wittle baby!'
