Did you guys choose your dress based on your figure or just simply because you like it?

Re: Choosing a wedding dress????
Both!
I had it down to two that I liked and I asked everyone around which one looked better on my figure... I think it's more important that the dress is flattering as opposed to just you liking it...

Re: Choosing a wedding dress????
I never would have chosen my gown out of a magazine or from pictures. I had an amazing consultant (who also designs gowns) who asked me a few questions when I first met her. We established a budget, my 'style' and taste and determined what I felt were the good and bad parts of my body.
She agreed that my gown needed to accentuate the natural curves of my body, while kind of hiding the problem spots most of us dislike. I tried on many traditional styled dresses which made me look like a big pair of boobs on top of a huge puffy skirt I looked like I had no waist at all. She advised me to go with a 'dropped' waist which makes my torso look longer and waist look smaller than my bust/hips.
The gown I purchased was the very first gown I tried on, even though I tried on numerous gowns none of them came close!! My consultant was AMAZING, I can't thank her enough

Re: Choosing a wedding dress????
I am tall and somewhat slender and all styles basically suit my figure. One of the dresses I like is ballgown type dress but I guess I am second guessing myself because a friend of mind says she hates those big dresses. Said she tried one on when she was getting married and it made her look like a cake...WHO CARES about how it looked on you....(and she hasn't even seen me in the dress)

Re: Choosing a wedding dress????
You have to try on all different style. You might not think that a dress will look good on you on the rack or a model but, you might really like it, Try all different styles and then determine what is most flattering. I wanted a mermaid but, then when I tried them on I felt it wasen't really what I felt comfortable in.

Re: Choosing a wedding dress????
I'm tall and thin and everyone wanted me to get a sleek, form fitting dress because my body type can wear it. I've always dreamed of a big dress, so I went with what I wanted......I think the 'poof' looks good on me!

Re: Choosing a wedding dress????
I think I tried on about 30 dresses, I am not kidding! When I found my dress I knew it was THE dress. Then I went on the maggie sottero website to see my dress on the model and it turned out that it was one of the dresses I had saved in my notebook! It looked a lot different in person but its great because I liked it in general AND liked it on me

Re: Choosing a wedding dress????
I picked a dress that complemented my figure. My dream dress that I saw in a magazine was a dissapointment when I tried it on. It was cheaply made and was too much dress for me.

AGREE...all dresses look different on everyone! Ballgown dresses look HORRIBLE on me but one of my BF's is getting a ballgown and that style looks HOTTTT on her! Really depends....don't let others deter you from what you love!

Re: Choosing a wedding dress????
I worked with a woman who used to own a bridal dress shop. She suggested the first time I go to look at dresses to go by myself and 'get over myself' in a wedding dress...Once I got over that inital excitement, I found one that I loved and that fit well. It wasn't my original desired style but I love it!! After I found it, I showed my family and fmil a group of 3 or 4 I had narrowed down to. I tried my favorite (the one I bought) on last...They all knew right away it was the one! :)

Re: Choosing a wedding dress????
I actually brought in a picture of a dress that I liked and the sales associate at the salon brought out a bunch of dresses that were similar in style. I tried them all on and ended up getting the 1st dress I tried on.
Good luck on your gown search. Try on lots of different dresses...even some that you think you might not like...they look totally different on.

Re: Choosing a wedding dress????
I wouldnt worry about what your friend though. Its your body, your wedding and your dress! Just a piece of advice, try on EVERYTHING. even the ones you thought you'd never wear. I swore off beading, sweetheart neckline, and strapless..i ended up with all those things!! lol it really looked good and i was so happy putting it on. And i tried on like 20 dresses

Re: Choosing a wedding dress????
Acutally it was both for me.. I'm a plus size and I was concerned about my arms and stomach areas... I also have a small chest and I didn't want to look like I was totally flat if that makes sense.
I also needed (because it's a jewish ceremony) a gown that has a jacket or sleeves. I tried on many styles and ended up with the first gown I tried on - Maggie Sottero's Rosemary Leigh. The gown style was recommended by the bridal consultant that I met with at Lillette's.

Re: Choosing a wedding dress????
both. originally everyone wanted to put me in a ball gown and i was like i am not a princess type so no thank you. So my gown really fit my personality and taste. Saying that I had no clue what it looked like on me since no samples fit on me so it was a chance. I am very glad i picked it though!

Re: Choosing a wedding dress????
I wanted a sleek, form fitting dress, but was looking for lace. Every dress I was in love with was lace but I couldn't find one that gave me a shape. I actually went with a dress I randomly found at a sample sale because it fit my shape perfectly.
