Christmas Traditions

Christmas Traditions

I am sorry if someone already posted this or asked this.. I am curious though. Does anyone have any special traditions for Christmas? Anything that you plan to do for your kids?

When I was little my dad would climb up on the roof and pretend to be Santa while we were in bed. He would ring jingle bells, and say HO HO HO and stomp around. My mom would shine a red flashlight in the window and we were CONVINCED Rudolph was there. IT was the absolute BEST feeling. We always left raindeer food (Oatmeal with glitter in it) and cookies for santa. 'Santa' always left us a note telling us how good we were and what we might want to work on in our behaviour for next year. This is the first year we are in a HOUSE and I can't wait to do the jingle bells and climbing on the roof for the boys! We also plan to take pics of Rob (dressed as Santa) in the fireplace!

Re: Christmas Traditions

The christmas tradition we had when we were younger is my grandmother used to buy us all the same PJs in all different colors. My 3 sisters and I would curl up in our matching PJs on the couch with my dad Christmas Eve and he would read us Twas the Night Before Christmas. We would leave out cookies for santa and then head to bed.
Christmas morning my mom and dad would make us a big breakfast (when we got older they would go out to the deli and get egg sandwiches) and then we would open presents. It was great.

Re: Christmas Traditions

This is silly but my mom always bought me and my sister christmas pj's and we could not wear them untill christmas eve. Really never asked her why she did this. But we really got into it. When we got older she did not stop.

My sister has been married almost a month now and I will be getting married and I figured this year she was not going to do it. Well the other day I came home and went in my room and there were pj's hanging in front of my closet. Went into my sisters old room and there were hers hanging on her closet. I Guess she will give them to her when she stops home one day.

I just think it's the funniest thing and I guess marraige is not going to stop her.

I am going to do the same tradition with my kids and hopefully start new ones.

Re: Christmas Traditions

as kids we did the usual cookies for santa, carrots for the reindeer & huge Italian feast on Christmas Eve. We would all go to mass as a family- either midnight mass or the next morning. we'd also go either see the christmas spectacular or the nutcracker ballet every year- i'd love to continue that tradition for my kids, it was so special. we'd make a trip out of it, see the tree, check out the windows at Saks and pop into St Patricks. Happy memories that I hope to recreate for my future family

Re: Christmas Traditions

I think the northern germans (no bias, of course!) came up with a really good one.... and I've kept the traditions....

Chocolate on the christmas tree! I make a point to buy foil wrapped chocolate ornaments and unwrapped chocolate ornaments (they are ring-shaped, with colored sprinkles on one side), and string them on the tree...... Kids are encouraged to 'eat the tree' (of course starting from the back!).

I also make speculaas (spice cookies made with a special rolling pin that leaves pictures of birds / pine cones / candles on the cookies)

that plus some stollen (cake) and gluvine (spiced hot red wine), and you have a delicious christmas eve!

Aw, Giggles 62

your mom is the cutest! We used to do the PJ thing to but my Mom stopped at some point but I cannot remember when.

Iam filing a grievance with her first thing in the morning.

Re: Christmas Traditions

Well, I'm Jewish but I got Santa Claus gifts until I was like 22 or so and I just played along. How's that for a Christmas tradition?!!

When I was really little my dad, well, ummm, he'd pour water on the patio in just a few places and say that the reindeer peed. I remember that but he now claims that he used to move dog poop onto the patio and claim that the reindeer pooped. I don't remember that part. Ahh, yes, Christmas at the Jewish home!!!! How classy!!

Oh, and we got to visit so many neighbors who would invite us over because they wanted us to have some enjoyment on Christmas. We probably got invited to more places on Christmas than any Catholic family!

Re: Christmas Traditions

I love the PJ Idea... maybe I will do that for the boys this year!

I also make ornaments every year. I started when Robbie was born. He has 5 now. Noah is 3 and has three. I figure, by the time they are old enough to move out and have a tree of their own, they will have a lot of ornaments to decorate it with!

Re: Christmas Traditions

christmas is my favorite holiday and we have sooooo many traditions:
christmas eve we do the whole italian thing with fish and TONS of presents. My uncles always dress up as santa and ring bells and the whole nine. At midnight it was always my job, since im the oldest, to put Jesus in the manger and we always all had matching pjs.
my family up until about a year or two ago used to go away and actually cut down our christmas tree - just liek the griswolds lol
there are so many that i cant even list or just limit it to one tradition
