Sooo at Christmas I was talking to FH's aunt who is very involved with the church. She told me that church's are now becoming very strict and wants everyones shoulders covered. I was not even thinking of that!
Now I don't know what to do with all my bm's.... I don't want them to spend more money than they already did on their dress. And what about me !! What am I going to wear!?
Has anyone given any thought to this? Does anybody have any suggestions?

Re: Church ceremonies
I was in a wedding in sept. and we had strapless dresses on. We didnt cover our shoulders and it wasnt a problem. Ask your church.

2010 bride here:
this was an issue at my brothers wedding a couple of years ago. when my SIL found out she called the place where we got out dress from & they were nice enough to provide extra faberic. i am not sure if she paid for it but you can try that. or maybe you can find some nice pashminas.

Re: Church ceremonies
depends on the church. At St. Barnabas in Bellmore, you do not have to cover your shoulders.
1ST of all not all churches require this but you should ask and find out....2nd..you are getting married in the winter and if you plan on taking any outdoor pics...your girls will want something for their shoulders regardless! lol I ended up buying the shawls that came with my bm gowns for them...but they were only another $40 on top of the cost of the gown...well worth it....you dont really want them wearing bulky coats in between things...the photographer will be snapping pics and a gorgeous dress covered by a northface puffy jacket is not what i want in my album...

check with your church. My church does not require that shoulders be covered but I know some do.

Re: Church ceremonies
I am getting married in St Elizabeths in Melville and the priest used to work in the diocesis so I know he's going to be strict. I was going to get a bolero jacket but I don't want to wear it during the ceremony...
And if I do get the shawls for the girls, should I pay for those or ask the girls to shell out more money ?

Re: Church ceremonies
Honestly, pay for the shawls for the girls or find a more cost effective alternative that you can work with.
If this were sprung on me (even though it's no fault of your own) after the dresses had been purchased, I would be annoyed.
If you haven't ordered dresses, however...just include this.
Usually your veil covers your shoulders and that is acceptable.

Re: Church ceremonies
Why not order inexpensive pashminas or go into the city and buy them? That would definitely be an inexpensive fix.

Re: Church ceremonies
i would say it depends on the church/parish... my church didn't mention anything to me about this...

Re: Church ceremonies
Check with your church.
In Europe this is still the case but here it is a very lax rule. I have not seen this rule in affect in a VERY Long time.
You should still give your girls pashminas to wear when outside. I ordered mine from peachcouture.com -- great site with lots of color options and great price. It was part of their gift.

Re: Church ceremonies
Definitely used to be MORE strict I would say (I have 4 older sisters who are in their 40s and 50s) and they used to have to cover....so my Mom was horrified when I picked out a strapless gown.
Typically the veil covering the shoulder will suffice as well...just run it by your priest.
