Church Question

Church Question

I have a few questions for those of you getting married in a church.

1. Are you a member of that parish?
2. If not, is the church outside of your religion or denomination?

I'm Lutheran and FH is Catholic. Neither of us are very religious but do want to have our ceremony in a church.

I'm wondering how strict some of these churches will be in allowing us to get married in their church if we are not affiliated with their particular denomination (ie. Protestant, Episciopal, etc.) or even a member of their church.

I'm asking these questions because as many ofy you know, I'm planning our wedding from the West Coast and researching churches online is very frustrating - it's not as if all of them have websites and we're restricted to certain neighborhoods in Brooklyn. I want to make sure that I'm prepared when I begin making these phone calls.

Thanks Ladies!

Re: Church Question

One of the two you have to be that religion.

Catholic Churches will ask you to provide a letter from your current parish stating that they allow you to marry in another parish (only the person who is catholic will have to provide this).

For Catholic Churches you will have to participate in precana -- since you are out of state you will have to show proof that you completed it in your current parish.

Re: Church Question

As far the Catholic church goes, at least one of you has to belong to that faith. I can't speak for other faiths. Neither FH or I belong to the church where we are getting married. We felt it best to have it on neutral ground (and, more realistically, I plain don't like my church and his is across the street from a cemetary!).

We had to get letters from our church granting permission to marry elsewhere as well as copies of our sacramental certificates, and complete a pre-cana course. HTH!

Re: Church Question

I'm Catholic and my FH is Lutheran. We're getting married in my church. They have no issue with him getting married in a Catholic church but the one problem you may run into is that you're not physically here.

For example, my FH is in the military so he's not here. The dioscese of Rockville Centre which is where pretty much every Catholic Church here belongs to requires an in person interview basically a year before the wedding date. For me they are bending the rules and doing my FH's interview on the phone since he can't get military leave to do it in person.

As far as the precana goes you can do it at any church anywhere.
