Now that we are in contract for a house I have fully realized the amount of time and effort that would go into cleaning up. We both work full time and will be spending almost 3 hours on commute every day, so the idea of spending weekends cleaning up is not very appealing.
How do you handle the cleaning of your house? If you have someone help you, how did you find that person? Was she/he refereed to you by someone you know, or did you just place an add in the newspaper or something? What is the going rate for a cleaning lady now, and how difficult is it to find a reliable one? (We are in Wantagh) Also, does she have the keys from your house, or do you 'baby-sit' het while she is in your house?

I have a cleaning lady (actually it's a 3 person crew) come and I LOVE it!
They are the same people my parents have used for many, many years and coincidentally my inlaws used them also before DH and I even met! They are still using them now.
My people charge me $60 for a 4 bedroom colonial, but I think it's on the cheap side b/c we go way back. I have had people come to give me estimates just to see the compitition and they lowest that was quoted for us was $80.

We're still in an apartment, but Merry Maids comes once a month to clean. It's worth every penny!!!!

I commute too and DH works 11-12 hour days. We split the cleaning (straightening up) during the week and I actually like cleaning so I don't mind. He is really good though and helps all the time.

Cleaning Service. I use Miracle Maids on Bellmore Ave. It isn't the cheapest and but the amount of time I regain is soooo worth it. I pay about $95+tax for a 4 bedroom, 2.5 bath house - they bring their own supplies - bi-weekly cleaning rate. I am hoping to get someone who does it privately at a cheaper rate.

i hope to use someone every 2 weeks. we both work 12+ hours a day. our house is small so i cant imagine it being more than 50 bucks. its worth it to me.

I have used a cleaning lady on and off since we moved in a few years ago. However, I just started using Merry Maids. I think it is worth every penny.

DH and I were also just alking about this just the other night. We both work ridiculous hours, and lately it's been getting harder and harder to keep everything in our house clean - there just isn't enough time to do everything I'd like and I end up just leaving it... We are looking into a bi-weekly plan with Merry Maids right now, their prices are very reasonable and I think the saved time makes it worth the expense!!

We clean ourselves. I do most of the day to to day cleanup. But DH will clean whatever I ask him, but on his time schedule. We tend to do a big cleaning every other week and once a week we vaccuum and go over the bathroom and kitchen counters.
We did hire a cleaning service (Merry Maids) to come right before the wedding so everything would be prestine. They did a great job on our windows, but I wasn't that impressed with the kitchen and some other stuff. They were very expensive, and overall, I think we do a better job ourselves.

Thanks for responding guys. Looks like Merry Maids are very popular, but a bit pricey. I would like to find someone who would come in privately, and hopefully would cost less. One thing I am not sure of is would it be safe to leave the cleaning crew in your house if you are not there?
