I've been to a cocktails-only reception where they served different kinds of sliders, tons of shrimp, passed hors d'oeuvres, veggie platters, pasta, etc. and it was very nice. There was so much food it almost felt like a buffet. I think the thing is that you have to feel assured that there will be enough food so people aren't leaving hungry. (The RH should be able to address your concerns.) As a guest, I was glad I knew it would be cocktails and hors d'oeuvres from the beginning. I've heard of another bride who did a cocktail reception, and then had guests back to the house afterwards for an in-home catered (but simple) buffet.

I'm having my cocktail reception wedding in 9 days. I did a lot of research. I can tell you that it's typically more expensive to pull off than a sit down at local venues because it requires more attention and more staff.

I had a cocktail reception and it baffles me when people say that its not enough food or people leave hungry. I had more food at my wedding than i have ever seen before. I had my first hour of passed foods and then i have 7 food stations open. It was pretty much like a buffet but with better options. People could not believe the amount of food i had. People went up and got 3, 4 , 5 plates. I wouldn't have changed a thing. It was awesome. I thought my price pp was great. I really got so much for my money and stayed within budget.

i read this in a magazine last night- that it is more expensive. who knew! everything i saw about buffets was cheaper too! must be the passing waiters!

keep in mind that this is typically more expensive bc you need more staff to pass, and have attendants at the stations. and there is generally more food because they dont know what people will eat more of so they have to prepare for the worst cast. At least w a sit down they more or less know what people will eat and have a formula.

I completely agree. We had a cocktail/heavy hors d'oeuvres and dessert reception and it was NOT more expensive than a sit down dinner. We, too, had passed first and then stations. We got almost every option available and it was soooo much food.
