Cocktail Hour in the City for Engagement Gathering?
Has anyone had, or been to, a cocktail hour type of engagement 'gathering' (or you could call it a more laid back type of engagement party)? I don't really want to have the whole rented out hall with caterers and DJ type of party.... but we do want to celebrate with our friends and immediate family.
I'm thinking about just having drinks, h'ordeorves and maybe some live music at a lounge type place in the city to celebrate our engagement. Has anyone done this or been to one? What did/do you think? Thanks!!!

no problem - it is a good idea though - it keeps the engagement party from looking like a mini wedding
For my engagement party we had lots of passed appitizers - and crudite out, steak to make mini sandwhiches and lobster tails, clams, and oysters - it was fine - it allows people to mingle more then a sit down meal

Re: Cocktail Hour in the City for Engagement Gathering?
my parents had it catered at their house - but my house is meant to host parties - we had about 90 people - wanted less but it was fine
I had to have something at my parents house because they live on the water - but too hard to get 250 people at my parents house for the wedding
we started the party aroung 4 so that everyon could enjoy the view - it isn't a bad time to rent a bar for you either - because it is before they get crowded - i would probably do it more in the winter because people don't mind being indoors - come the summer - most peole like to be outside - got to appreciate the sun when it is nice

I did a similar thing in the city. We invited all of our friends and some relatives to an open bar kind of thing, with some appetizers. We wanted just a casual, fun celebration and we didnt want anyone to bring gift. We had such a good time.
ETA: We kept calling it a gathering, too, lol, because we felt if we said come to our enagagement party people would think it was a traditional party and feel they had to bring a gift.

my friend just had one at Flute. She had passed food and open bar for 3 hrs. It is a lounge and was perfect for a informal party/celebration. Not sure of price though. She had about 100 people

I love Flute (the midtown one)! Sounds like a great place to have a gathering like that.
