I believe it is common for Jewish weddings because (and correct me if I am mistaken) if it is a Saturday night wedding - they must wait till sundown. So...instead of starting the ENTIRE wedding really late, they have a cocktail hr first, then the ceremony after sundown, and then continue with the reception.

Re: Cocktail hr. before ceremony
You are 100% correct! That is why it is done for Jewish weddings. Sundown is late in the summer months so this way the wedding can start a little earlier with the cocktail hour first and then the ceremony.

Some of my guests would be wasted if I did it before.

I've never been to a wedding with it, but my hall is setting up a continental breakfast for my early arrivals. My ceremony is at 11:30am.

Does this apply for a Sunday wedding as well?

Re: Cocktail hr. before ceremony
No, it only applies to Saturday. You can't have the wedding before sundown on a Saturday because it is the Sabbath.
